If you are underentitled, you already feel like you do not measure up to where you should be. Being underentitled people often see the bad parts of themselves, and struggle to find the good. A juvenile is already going to be wary of a probation officer. They don’t know who you are, and they already probably will not like the situation that they are in. And underentitled youthful offender is already going to have feelings of inadequacy and other issues.

I understand that going into the field that I choose, there is going to be various different situations and people that I am going to encounter during my career that I may not like, or who I don’t get along with. But part of having a job that involves relations with other people and delinquents, is learning to sometimes set aside your own feelings to help them. There are going to issues that I am not going to like. For instance, I find it really hard to work with people who are racist and/ or sexist. If a person acts a certain way towards race or sex, I have a hard time controlling how to work and handle these people. I think it is important to look at the bigger picture. What if someone was raised to believe something, or did not know better? Every probation officer comes into connect with so many juveniles, it is hard to not be impacted by the people around you. There are always going to be youths who impact you in a good way, and in a less positive way. You’re working with them, helping them grow, helping them try and find the right path. That alone can be extremely emotional. You’re trying to help someone change their life, and the influences that these people leave are going to change who you are. A new probation officer does not have the experience that veteran officer may have. And why is that? Because a veteran has come in contact with so many different juveniles who have changed the way they see their job. That is how you get experience, through the people that you have worked with who have changed you, for better or for worse. If you have a job, like working with juveniles, and you work so hard to help them, and you can see that you are making a difference for them, that is going touch you, because you know that you are impacting someone’s life, and by doing that you have impacted your
