As someone who is not originally from Texas there were many factors that went into my decision to attend the University of Houston-Downtown. I first heard about UHD from my sister who had nothing but good things to say about the university, then I was reigned in by Dr. Mari Nicholson of the university Honors Program. As the end of high school approached I knew that making the move from Louisiana to Texas to attend UHD would not be a mistake. Growing up I always looked up to the ambassadors at each level of education because to me they always represented the cream of the crop. If someone wanted to know something the ambassadors were the ones they went to.…

There is neither an agreement nor requirements to indisputably define the term ‘Good international citizen’. The term was firstly introduced by the Canadian Governor-General in 1967 during a speech reflecting on Canada’s standing in the world in its centennial year. Since then the term developed its concept, and the concept was developed in Australian case by Gareth Evans, who was the former Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1988 to 1996. Evans used the phrase repeatedly in his speeches, papers and books but failed to offer clear definition of the term. Rather, he referred the term to Australian foreign policy, citing particular government practice as an example.…

Last December, I was on my twin bed sitting by my window, blasting to Lady Gaga, when I came to the realization that I was never really me. The identity of the timid, smart Hispanic girl I had fabricated to please my English teachers in high school was not who I was. There are numerous amounts of people in the world who spend the rest of their lives not knowing who they really are, and a bigger quantity of people who hide their true selves; I was one of the few percentage who lived in denial of their sexual orientation. My whole life I rejected the possibility of fancying the opposite sex because of the environment I grew up in. In 6th grade when I was 11 years old, I was jealous of how much one of my female friends would pay attention to our…

I could not exactly understand what made me so different from my classmates and I desired more than anything to gain the self-confidence to express myself.…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
