Banning the ‘Throw-Away Society’
The “throw-away” society is a human society strongly influenced by consumerism. (1st pp)Today due to high affordability and availability of the disposable products, our society has turned into a “throw-away” society which is also leading to the increase in the production of such products. Plastics have transformed our everyday life. And over the years, the pile of the waste products on the planet has created several hazards to the environment. To save our environment for the future generations to come, the United States need to develop new government regulations to mend the waste quantity and also people needs to be aware of all these hazards and the need of the regulations. The manufacturing companies are easily able to find loop holes in such laws and sell their products in the market in a legal way such as introducing recyclable plastics. Not only major manufacturing industries oppose these laws but common peoples also oppose these. In 2013, the United State Department of Agriculture reported that there were 17.5 million households which were food insecure. By banning and taxing the plastic bags is going to raise the grocery bills of struggling and working families and also the price of the groceries (Jenson, Rabbitt, Gregory, and Singh). Not only United States, but other countries around the world are taking steps towards controlling the waste from throw-away products. France becomes the first country in the world to ban disposable plastic cups and plates and this ban will go into effect in January 2020. (1st pp) The country hopes to become leader of the world in the environmental and energy solutions. This ban has been happily accepted by many but some opposed it too. Even though the government has regulations regarding the waste management but the manufacturing companies are able to find loops in those laws. Although ban laws have little effect, regarding solid waste policy, but they have triggered the major consumer companies, retailer, and packaging manufacturers to take interest in the waste policy and to invest significant resources in the recycling.
