Recently the United States have been subject to racial discrimination and the controversy surrounding the topic has resulted in multiple tragedies in our society. It can be considerably seen that the racial discrimination has created an undergoing turmoil for various hate crimes, police brutality and overall resurfacing discrimination throughout the country. The most recent subject at hand in which is being discussed is the banning of the Confederate flag. Should the confederate flag be banned? Why or Why not? I chose this topic because it is projected major confrontation between minorities, and other human races. I believe that the author is directing his argument to the entire world population. I would assume that the author is trying to persuade his audience into banning the flag. The author included worldwide known companies, announcing the decision of banning the confederate flag merchandise. I would like to analyze the meaning behind the representation of the Confederate Flag. Although, the article mainly focuses on the banning of the Confederate flag, I would discuss the two different perceptions of the flag in particular to the racial standpoint. The Americanized symbols such as the Confederate flag, serves as a representation of the continued oppression throughout America’s racial aspect. Author, CJ Lee assembled an article that includes a numerous amount of claims, along with a substantial amount of evidence. An example of a claim included in the article, “Johnna Hoff, an eBay spokesperson, said that the Confederate flag has "become a contemporary symbol of divisiveness and racism." This statement can be used in an argument, but also used a representation to prove a point if necessary in an argument. Other individuals might disagree with the statement, based on their personal representation on what the Confederate flag symbolizes. If the viewer, or reader already has opinions, or judgment on the issue, it will not serve a purpose of persuasion. If the reader does not have a stance on the situation, the argument could possibly persuade the audience into suppressing the Confederate flag. For many decades, throughout our American history the Confederate flag has been known as the “flag of segregation.” This came upon during the time of the Civil War, than merging into the Civil Rights Movement. To other individuals, the Confederate flag is established as the “Battle of Northern Virginia flag.” In this case, the flag was to represent the South, and led to community into the Civil War. The red, white, and blue represented in the flag represents the unity of this country’s overcoming, of battle and war. The “X” in the Confederate flag represents the South, along with the 13 stars which can be known as the 13 original colonies that are displayed in the flag. Many representations and perceptions have come about the flag throughout the history when it was adopted in 1861.
