Over the years, America’s obesity problem has been growing due to many factors — the most significant being sugar. Americans tend to have a very strong sweet tooth, so most of the foods they consume are very high in sugar. Therefore, scientists have been trying to develop new, healthier sweeteners that have the same properties as sugar (minus the calories and harmful side effects) so that they can tap into the continuously growing $11.4 billion dollar low-calorie sweetener industry (Toesland 2015). There are currently many well-known sugar substitutes on the market as of today, but many of them have drawbacks. For example, Splenda is one of the most used low-calorie sweeteners in the world, however, it has major drawbacks such as its “long-lasting aftertaste and synthetic or chemical perception” (Toesland 2015) prevent many people from consuming it. However, a new low-calorie sweetener has recently been released by Matsutani America — known as Astraea Allulose. Astraea Allulose is a new, plant based product that has been designed to replace sugar in various consumer goods, such as baked products, drinks, dairy, chewing gum, hard candies, and confectionery (Schroeder 2015). Due to its growth and potential, the industry is expected to become a $23 billion industry by 2025. As long as medical conditions such as diabetes, a medical condition that forces people to significantly cut down on sugar intake, are a problem in the United States, people will need sugar substitutes. Additionally, the price of sugar has been increasing year by year, so if food and drink manufacturers want to cut down on costs and calories, low-calorie sweeteners such as Astraea Allulose will be their best option.
