Raguindin English Aquarium Controversy Essay Are zoos, aquariums & marine parks a positive or negative impact on the planet’s animals and community? I think zoos, aquariums & marine parks have a positive impact because they provide shelter, food and health care for animals that would not be able to survive out in the wild otherwise. Aquariums, zoos & marine parks can help bring the population of an endangered species up by breeding the endangered species because the breeding conditions in the ocean can be hard to reproduce in. Also zoos aquariums & marine parks can be used for education because some (most) schools will have field trips that can help kids learn about how to keep the oceans safe & how to preserve our oceans and planet.

A lot of people think that SeaWorld is mistreating their animals and do not care for the safety of their workers due to a recent documentary called Blackfish. It was released to convince people that SeaWorld was mistreating their animals and have dangerous working conditions for their employees. However most of this is false information. The sole purpose of this documentary was to manipulate people into believing that SeaWorld should be shut down because it is mistreating animals. The documentary is very untrue & misleading. One of the former SeaWorld trainers, Mark Simmons, who was interviewed in the documentary released a statement stating that his interview was misconstrued. He said that the creators of Blackfish altered his words and made it seem as if he was saying that SeaWorld deceives its trainers and the

The article “After SeaWorld, a ‘Blackfish effect’ on circuses and zoos?” by Kelly Wallace has gotten a lot of people feeling mixed emotions. In this article it says, “the public has completely changed its opinion on exploiting and killing animals for entertainment.” In SeaWorld animals are being killed and parents are not ok with this. This is no longer fun and educational for their kids. SeaWorld has banned the use of the bullhook which is a tool that helps handle and train the elephants.…

The entire film is relies on false authority. The audience has no one to believe but the trainers used in the film, most of which have not worked for SeaWorld in over 20 years. The experts the movie claims to use could be actors as far as the audience knows, and none of them help strengthen the central argument. Do any of these people know enough about whales in captivity to educate the audience? The film opens up with shots of a trainer in the water surrounded by whales.…

Which then lead to the incident. In an article, i read the abstract just and it talked about how it wasn’t until t5his incident trainers swam and trained with the whales ( Benjamin Wallace, Seaworld Breached). While doing some research I found an article about Seaworld and what happens to killer whales there, that usually won’t happen. On average, an Orca’s life span is usually 30-50 years, while in captivity 15 years( 8 Reasons Orcas Don’t Belong at Seaworld, PETA). Like in the documentary it is talked about the collapsed dorsal fin, how that just a little indicator the it isn’t a healthy environment( Blackfish, killer whale expert scientist).…

Many American families believe that SeaWorld is the best family vacation spot with its many parks all over the country. A typical visit to SeaWorld includes petting dolphins, visiting the aquarium, and being splashed by a majestic Orca. While SeaWorld may seem family-friendly, it definitely is not animal friendly. The tourist attraction, also known as SeaWorld, tortures its animals by ripping them from their homes and families, placing them in pools that might as well be bathtubs. Although families enjoy taking a trip to SeaWorld, they would feel a lot differently if they knew about the constant pain and torture inflicted on SeaWorld’s animals.…

At least 161 orcas have died in captivity at Seaworld due to the small enclosures and dangerous training. Seaworld is a marine resort that captives water related animals such as orcas, dolphins, and flamingos. They train the animals to put on shows and do tricks that they would never naturally do. Tilikum, a 22 foot, 12,500 pound orca, was captured in November of 1983 when he was just a calf. Trainer Keltie Byrne was pulled to the bottom of a tank by Tilikum and drowned.…

In the documentary film former SeaWorld trainers and Sealand trainers and employees, witnesses of killer whale attacks, OSHA employees, whale experts, SeaWorld’s killer whales, and employees at SeaWorld are casted in the film. Shark finning has been a worldwide issue. Approximately 73 million sharks are killed each year solely for their fins. But this number does not include the number of sharks that are killed for reasons other than finning (Raloff). China and Hong Kong are the largest importers for shark fins due to China’s cultural tradition for Shark Fin Soup (“How Many Sharks Are Killed Each Year For Their Fins?”). Shark Fin Soup was introduced into Chinese cuisine during the Sung Dynasty (AD 960–1279) but did not become incorporated into the Chinese tradition until the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368–1644) (“The End of The Line?”).…

SeaWorld has made several online statements about the inaccuracy of Blackfish. The most impressive of these statements was a 32-page document outlining many of Blackfish’s inaccuracies with cited evidence. For example, SeaWorld points out how most of the “SeaWorld trainers” interviewed in the film never worked with Tilikum, and how the film uses outdated information and footage to ignore SeaWorld’s modern facilities and protocol. News outlets still unfairly consider SeaWorld a target anyway, because Blackfish appeals to emotion while SeaWorld fights back with facts. Blackfish in news articles is often framed as if the film’s producers are underdogs stepping up against the soulless corporate entity that is SeaWorld.…

With the documentary there also came lots of questions as to if everything seems to be correct and every fact can be backed up with specific evidence to prove that SeaWorld is in fact engaging with their whales the way that Blackfish states. One of the top questions that has remained unanswered is if SeaWorld says that things in Blackfish documentary were false and they used fallacies then why did SeaWorld not offer to give an interview and declined them when they offered? This is something that remains unanswered and so does every other statement stated by these top trainers that used to work at SeaWorld. Another thing that is not clear to the audience of Blackfish is why are there no recent SeaWorld trainers that are currently working with these orcas’ that were interviewed? Even though everyone that was interviewed in Blakfish were ex- orca trainers they still had more than just the facts, they gave specific evidence to back up any claims towards…

Zoos protect animals from these dangers and can help reintroduce endangered species back into the wild. “Quite simply without these efforts there would be fewer species alive today and ecosystems and the world as a whole would be poorer for it.” (Source D). These conservation efforts are important to the environment as the extinction of one species could devastate an entire ecosystem. Zoos are able to take care of animals much better than these animals can on their own.…

“The film, however, does blame Ms. Brancheau, and it accomplishes this through former trainers with little or no relevant experience” (TRUTH ABOUT BLACKFISH). By switching the story many times after the witnesses came out with the truth shows they will say anything to make SeaWorld a good place. An employee tells the audience that “twenty five percent of whales has a fin that turns over like that as they get older” but in fact” one percent of orcas have dorsal fins” says an orca researcher (Blackfish). As the employee feeds the audience false facts that is used to protect SeaWorld from being known as a bad place, they are made to believe this is true because it comes from an orca expert, as so they think. Manipulating them to believe…
