Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing

“Traditional animal testing is expensive, time-consuming, uses lots of animals, and from a scientific perspective the results do not necessarily translate to humans.” - Dr. Christopher P. Austin
Animal testing is cruel and should be stopped. A few reasons are that Animal tests do not reliably predict the same results in human beings, Alternative testing methods now exist that can replace the need for animals. Also animals are especially vulnerable to mistreatment and abuse without the protection of the Animal Welfare Act. Animal tests do not reliably predict the same results in human beings. In fact 94% of drugs that pass animal tests fail in human clinical trials. Also according to neurologist Aysha Akhtar, MD, MPH, “Over 100 stroke drugs that were effective when tested on animals have failed in humans, and over 85 HIV vaccines failed in humans after working well in non-human primates.”

For example microfluidic chips or otherwise known as “Organs on a chip”. These are lined with human cells and can recreate the functions of the human body. Also there are virtual reconstructions of humans which can predict the toxicity of substances without the invasive experiments on animals. Another example is that in glass testing can produce more relevant results than animal testing because human cells can be used. Animals are especially vulnerable to mistreatment and abuse without the protection of the AWA. For instance 95% of animals used in experiments are not protected by the AWA. Also the AWA does not cover rats, mice, fish and birds, which comprises around 95% of the animals used. With this in mind in 2010 the AWA covered 1.1 million animals used in testing but that leaves around 25 million other animals

In 2008, a video was released by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that showed severe animal cruelty at Mowmar Farms Hog Confinement, located just outside of Fairmont, Minnesota (Genoways). The video showed employees prodding hogs too crippled to stand with electric prods and beating hogs repeatedly on their backs with metal gate rods (Genoways). Adding to this, the video also revealed the method the workers used to euthanize underweight piglets: a technique called thumping (Genoways). Thumping involves workers taking the piglets by their hind legs and smashing their skulls against the concrete floor. Their bodies would then be put in large bins, where they would be left to die (Genoways).…

There are many alternatives to animal testing and excuses need to stop being made to keep animal testing in business. It may seem like it is the only option, but there are so many new ways to do the exact same test in ways which do not involve animals at all. It is cruel and inhumane to keep animals in small cages and not only physically, but also mentally harm them. Artist Leonardo Da Vinci once said, “The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.” The time for animals to be treated similarly to humans can be…

Animals all around the world are used for testing and research. People always wonder why people use animals. They ask why would scientist put these innocent creatures through something horrible. It has been proven that scientist use about 100 million animals for testing and research each year. From personal research, I have seen many inhumane things happen to these creatures that should not happen.…

As humans, we should not use animals for testing for our own benefit because we can find possible alternatives, the Animal Welfare Act has not succeeded in preventing horrific cases of animal abuse during these experiments, and it is cruel and inhumane. First, some forward-thinking scientists are trying to find new and advanced ways to test products and medicine without…

Rats, mice fish and birds are mostly used in this research, which makes up ninety-five percent of the animals used. Using animals that aren’t covered makes these creatures very vulnerable to mistreatment and unprotected abuse. Another disadvantage from animal experimenting is that animals can suffer just like humans. Believe it or not there are many products that lead to death of both humans and animals.…

Today we are aware that major differences between animals and humans makes it difficult to tell if the drug response in humans will turn out 100% positive. As humans we need to ask ourselves this question “when you need medical treatment, wouldn’t you want a medication that works for you not what works in a completely different species” (navs.org). The drugs that are safe to use on animals might not be safe for humans. One perfect example of that is the thalidomide study. During the 1950s thalidomide was prescribed to pregnant women to help with morning sickness.…

Knowing that animal testing plays big role in current medical breakthroughs, we would be stuck with the medications and treatments that we currently have without it. That means there would be no hope of facing big medical challenges we have nowadays, like cancer, AIDS, and etc. These diseases are not something that we should be careless about, because there is no guarantee for us to be free of these illnesses. Yet, we cannot also neglect the fact that animal testing is cruel and inhumane act. We are taking away animals’ rights to meet our needs just because we are more superior to…

Several scientists still like to use animal testing because they believe that it is effective; however, there are several alternatives that have been confirmed to be much more dependable. Scientists have developed new and improved procedures for testing products and studying illnesses. Studies that replace animal testing include in vitro testing, computer modeling, and studies with human volunteers. In vitro testing uses “organs on chips” which contain human cells that are grown in a lab to mimic the function of real human organs. Computer modeling, also known as in silico modeling, uses computer models that imitate human biology and the advancement of diseases.…

After studying multiple views on animal testing I have come to realize my personal view has now changed since the start of my research. Before undergoing heavy study into animal testing I believed that all types of animal testing should be stopped, but now I believe that the idea is very beneficial and should only be done when the rights of the animal are considered. In the coming years, hopefully, more regulations can be passed to ensure that all animal’s lives are protected during experimentation. Although most animals are treated with care and no pain is dealt to them when undergoing testing, it would be a lie if I stated no animals are harmed during the process. Animal testing is extremely useful in developing life-saving drugs and medicine.…
