Introduction
Can you imagine over 100,000 animals dying every year due to animal testing? Some people say it’s for a good cause. Others say it’s a cruel and inhumane thing to do. Animal testing has been going on since 500 BC. Testing on animals can result in many things including mutations and could lead to death, but by testing on them, scientists have discovered cures for some deadly diseases. The long history, the disadvantages, and the advantages of animal testing have lead to a very controversial topic with countless opinions on which side is best.
Pros of using animals for testing
There are many advantages of using animals for testing. First, doing this can help cure some …show more content…
Procon.org says that animal testing has been used since at least 500 BC. In ancient times, many scientists did procedures on animals before actually testing it on humans to ensure safety. More recently, the use of animal testing has gone up 73 percent in the last 15 years (Casey). “Of the 98 Nobel Prizes awarded for Physiology or Medicine, 75 were directly dependent on research from animals” (Pacheco). The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is a group that attempts to protect animal rights. Because of PETA, Europe has banned the sale of cosmetics with ingredients tested on animals. Many other celebrities have attempted to stop animal testing including Kesha, Paul McCartney, Michael Vartan and more. Other celebrities who support animal testing include Keira Knightley, Lupita Nyong’o, Matthew McConaughey and more. Animal testing is currently happening in some parts of the world. Andrew Rowan, President and Chief Executive Officer of animal protection group Humane Society International thinks that animal testing is temporary. He says, “I think it is going to start going down again as we improve our technologies.” So, as far as we know, animal testing will continue for a while, or at least (in Andrew Rowan’s opinion) until scientists improve their technology or discover a better way to research that doesn’t involve animals.
Conclusion
The advantages, the disadvantages and the long history have lead to a puzzling topic. Throughout the history, testing on animals has lead to many new discoveries and saved many lives but over 100,000,000 animals die every year due to this. This confusingly controversial topic has lead to many different opinions on which side is best. Which side are you on?
