Amnesty in America America is a land of laws. These laws that set guidance and standards of conduct for everyone. America is also a land of immigrants, who have come here and helped make us the nation we are. It’s a simple thing called amnesty. It’s allowing illegal immigrants a chance to gain citizenship. Immigrants have spent time, money and effort to come here in compliance with our laws. Amnesty is a pardon extended by the government to a group or class of persons,usually for a political offense. It can also be defined as the act of a sovereign power officially forgiving certain classes of persons who are subject to trial but have not yet been convicted. People say that amnesty to illegal immigrants is unfair to people who have been here and have not broken any sort of law. This is a good point but amnesty wouldn’t just be giving it away and “thanking” these people for breaking the law, its 5-6 year long process to make sure these people have done and will do everything in their power to be a well-rounded United States citizen. People are also afraid of being overpowered in numbers by illegal immigrants, but America has always proudly been a nation of immigrants. California Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said an amnesty program similar to the one the federal government undertook in the late 1980s would be ill-advised today. It just didn't work.
