Pros And Cons Of Ageism

I agree that majority of our thinking and thoughts of culture has been passing down from generation to generation. I have made mistake of stereotyping and grouping certain cultures. Stereotyping is the generalization or over exaggerated and often times offensive that is directed towards a group. “Research has found that negative stereotypes are particularly insidious because of their ability to reproduce the inequalities they reflect (Ridgeway and Balkwell1997; Kashima and Yeung 2010; Ridge-way2011)” We live in a world where people or cultures are judged. Ageism refers to the differential judgment and treatment of a person owing to his or her age and the judgment and treatment are likely undesirable for the person and racism. “Prejudice and discrimination against elderly people, stereotyped beliefs about elderly people, and gerontophobia are common indicators of ageism” (Palmore 1990). “Ageism is problematic because it contradicts ethical and scientific norms. It is unethical because it (1) undermines democratic principles, and (2) causes calamitous consequences for society as well as elderly people (Binstock 1983; Palmore 1990). We should not pre judge or stereotype the aging population. At adult protective services one of the mission statements reads ““As you see yourself, I once saw myself, as you see me now you will be seen” (DFPS).
