Not necessarily. Depends on what route VW decides to take since you have to ask yourself "why do this anyway?". There's a reason they wanted to install that cheat device to detect emissions testing devices. How do the cars drive when the car runs the same way it runs when it detects emission testing equipment? Does it suffer from drastically reduced power and/or fuel economy?
Most diesel cars have a separate reservoir to store and use something called AdBlue which is an urea based solution that helps reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Oddly enough, the 2.0L turbo-diesels that are affected by this lack an AdBlue tank. Should they decide to fit one onto these cars to make them legal...that could be quite time consuming and very costly.
