Enforced by the Clinton Administration from 1993 to 2011, the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” (DADT) law barred thousands of military members from expressing their sexual identity if they identified with any sexual orientation other than ‘straight’. It forced thousands of military members “under a cloud of anxiety and isolation,” essentially weakening military unit cohesion because of individual secrecy. “As a matter of national security, civil service, and fiscal responsibility,’ the repeal of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy was essential for positive efficacy of the military. With organization, quantitative and anecdotal studies in favor of the repeal, and being in the midst of war, the Obama administration was able to gather enough credibility…
To most people, it may be difficult to fully understand the many obstacles that trans people face on a daily basis. They face huge disparities in almost every facet of society. Employers and landlords may gainsay people jobs and homes because they don't conform to gender norms, which is licit to do in 31 states. The 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) found trans people are approximately four times as likely to live in extreme impecuniosity compared to the general population. NTDS found 57 percent of trans people report family abnegation.…
Jeff states allowing transgenders in the military is expensive, unfair, weakens the strength of the military and promotes backward logic. He feels transgender individuals are mentally unstable and thinks the battlefield is not a place to play Barbie dress up games. It is directly stated in the beginning of the article, that Jeff Allen is a senior editor and columnist for a conservative Christian news website which most likely contributes to his opinions on this issue. Today’s Child Abuse Creates Tomorrow's Criminals, By: Chandre Gould…
Many trans people thought that things had been looking up, however, Trump presented a whole new struggle to face. Through this adversity, however, the community has found some allies. “But while Judge Kollar-Kotelly did not specifically block a Trump administration policy prohibiting gender-reassignment surgery for service members at the government’s expense, Judge Garbis’ order does.” (Philipps, 2017) Legally, many promises that come out of the president's mouth aren’t possible. The fight against the restrictive force that is Trump and the rest of his team is coming on strong, and the judges fighting him are not likely to back…
Transgender. This word is being heard more and more in America but what does it mean? According to the Webster Dictionary, the word transgender means “of, relating to or being a person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that differs from the one which corresponds to the person 's sex at birth” ("Transgender"). Transgender and gender nonconforming people have in recent years earned recognition as being legitimate genders.…
Briana Phillips Keith Payne Honors Civics & Economics November 23, 2015 Should Gays Be Allowed To Openly Serve in The U.S. Military? Gays have been fighting for their equal rights since the beginning of time. People seem to always have a problem with homosexuals serving our U.S. military whether they are Christian or Atheist, although they do not seem to care as long as they don’t know about the person’s sexual preference. People are going to want to serve their country no matter their sexual preference.…
Incompatible? One of the most well-known pictures of the revolutionary war, painted by Emanuel Leutze almost a hundred years after, depicts a scene where George Washington stoically stands on a boat leading the troops across the frozen Delaware River. The American flag wraps around itself in the frozen wind, some troops are holding their hats, while others are paddling the claustrophobic wooden crafts. One guy even pushes a mini iceberg away with a stick so the boat can pass through the murky frozen waters.…
II. Transgender in the Military Transgender represents 3-5% of the American population. Being out while in the military carries with it a host of other associated difficulties, including overt discrimination and, in the past, possible discharge from the service (Cochran, Balsam, Flentje, Malte & Simpson, 2013). Currently 60,000 LGBT service members are serving in active duty and the inequality of the treatment that they are receiving is saddening.…
Under the Due Process Clause, the state and federal government is prohibited from depriving persons of liberty without due process of law. In Obergefell v. Hodges, it was recognized that the ban on same-sex marriage violated the liberty of same-sex couples; marriage was limited strictly to opposite-sex couple. In the same way, the transgender ban in the military violates the liberty of transgender individuals. Military entry is limited to those whose biological sex and gender identification are the same. I feel that the transgender ban is a clear violation of liberty element of the Due Process Clause.…
Rhetorical Analysis of an Argument Imagine a world where your gender defines who you are and who exactly you could become. Stereotypes about gender could be as simple as a person born male would become a construction worker or police officer and a person born female would become a school teacher or hair dresser. People are to fit into their gender stereotypes, and that was that. But, it is not the 1950s anymore.…
Joseph R Murray II states that President Trumps ban on Transgenders serving in the military is unfair. Though despite having this opinion, he is for the ban on the basis that Transgender people are dealing with issues psychologically and pysically. In addition, he Murray believes it would create a problem because people would spend more time talking about the issue of Transgenders fighting in the military aside from the greater issues that are occurring in society. With that being said, I would have to disagree with Murrays stance. There are many problems that I see within this ban.…
Donald Trump has raised many people's brows within his first year of presidency. Out of many irrational decisions made, one in particular has left America dumbfounded. Transgender individuals are set to be banned from enlisting in the military. Although it is true that transgender individuals are generally more high maintenance than others, the United States Military is more than capable of supporting the transgender minority.…
Non-Binary and Transgender People When a child is born the first thing their parents hear is, “Congratulations it’s a girl,” or “Congratulations it’s a boy”. Already trying to enforce the idea that there are only two genders the moment they take their first breath. JAC Stringer of the Heartland Trans* Wellness Group defined, gender binary as the cultural belief of only two genders existing and they have to correspond to the appropriate sex. This social construct is iterated on a daily basis whether it is through medical institutions, language or applications. As a result of its dominance in society, the gender binary system is highly exclusive towards non-binary and transgender people.…
There is one case where a transgender person was working in a funeral home and was fired for wearing the uniform of the gender she identified with instead of her biological gender. Although, “the court acknowledged that it’s unlawful to discriminate on the basis of gender stereotyping” the defender claimed that because of his religious belief he requires people to remain the sex they were born with; therefore, he should be exempt from the anti-discrimination laws because of the Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (Feldman). Transgender people are discriminated against in all levels of society, which in turn causes people to hide who they truly are, this can lead to depression and suicide. Therefore, the government should get involved in protecting its citizen’s lives and natural rights by implementing laws to protect them from such…
In 1993, President Clinton passed a bill called the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy which although permitted homosexuals to serve in the military, it banned any homosexual activity and banned anyone from being openly homosexual in the armed forces (“The American Gay Rights”). The result being a discharge of thousands of men and women in the armed forces. Up until December 18, 2010 — the law prohibited extremely qualified men and women from serving in the armed forces, virtually sending a message to America stating that discrimination was acceptable. Many laws similar to this, and also the ban on same-sex marriage puts messages out there implying homosexuals don’t deserve the rights other American citizens…
