Hi I am Eva Poulsen and I am arguing that geographic luck does exist, and is taking part in civilizations all over the world. Jared Diamond, a scientist and author, has recently discussed this. Geographic luck explains why some civilizations have more resources than others.
Diamond began to think of this explanation when a New Guinean named Yali asked this question ”Why is it that you white people have so much cargo, but we New Guineans have so little?” Diamond pondered this question until he came to a conclusion. Geographic luck caused both poverty, and riches. One example of this is how New Guinea functioned based on how the Fertile Crescent functioned. Another example is that only a few ancient civilizations had animals that could be domesticated and the rest of the civilizations were not able to domesticate animals. It was not only animals that were only able to survive in some places, but crops as well. Some places were able to grow a surplus of food and some were not. It is completely possible for this to happen. Crops need specific environments to grow in, as do animals.
