Proposition 67 Reflective Essay

This first semester of my last year here at V.I.S.A has been tough. Whoever said senior year was going to be fun and easy never went through the rigor that V.I.S.A provides. I have grown so much both academically and globally over these 4 years and never thought there was more to learn. I was wrong because two events (me writing my research paper and the rally in the valley) have changed my perspectives and taught me more about a topic. I have grown as an academic student by writing my research paper in both English and A.P. Government. This research paper had us choose a proposition that was on the recent ballot on November 8, 2016. I went ahead and chose to write about proposition 67. Proposition 67 seeks to keep the ban on plastic bags that was brought up by Senate Bill 270. Before the project I never understood why I should be worried about something I couldn’t even vote on. I never had an interest in knowing about our government, but after the …show more content…
I grew as a global citizen by taking action. I took action by being at the tally and protesting for Charter schools. Before the rally I was unaware about Charter schools being criticized. I had always thought people appreciated all schools, but the rally showed me otherwise. I had learned that people thought that Charter schools were stealing money and not getting donations. That is untrue because Charter schools use the grants and donations given to help their students have better lives and a better education. After the rally I had learned to appreciate my school more. My school gets many grants because our students tend to be economically stranded. Our students sometimes only get to eat at school and that isn’t something that should be happening. Everyone should at least have the right to have proper meals with their families. It is obvious not all schools have the same students, but not everyone has the same economic status

Proposition 61 is The Drug Price Relief Act and it deals with the regulating of drug price by requiring state agencies to pay the same price that the US Department of Veteran Affairs pays for prescriptions. Although proposition 61 entices many voters, it excludes 88% of Californians. Voting Yes on Prop 61 means state agencies will be prohibited from raising drug prices on any of the lowest prescriptions paid for by the US Department of Veteran Affairs. This will limit the price state agencies are paying for prescription drugs. Voting No on Prop 61 means that state agencies will be given the chance to negotiate the price and pay for prescriptions without having to pay the same as the US Department of Veteran Affairs.…

As the 8th of November dawned on the nation, voters across the nation lined up at the polls to cast their vote in the election. While most state ballots simply contained presidential candidates and state representatives, the California ballot was a bit more unique. There were severely options on the ballot that voters could mark either yes or no to certain choices simply called propositions. This begs the question, “What exactly are these California propositions?”. The California propositions are essentially state-wide initiatives that directly voted by the California voters rather than the state legislature.…

Retail locations for recreational marijuana use will not be open until January 1, 2018. It is also stated in proposition 64 that in the state of California, each county will be able to determine if the use of recreational marijuana will be legal or not. Proposition 55 should be passed because of the fact that the school system would receive funding from $4 billion to $9 billion. This funding will prevent cuts in school budget as well as cuts in extracurricular activities. According to “Can Gov. Jerry Brown keep the promises he made with Proposition 30?”, an article by Chris Megerian in the LA Times, “education funding could face billions of dollars in cuts, said Jennifer Wonnacott, a spokeswoman for this year’s tax campaign.” These cuts mean that the first cuts to be made will be the teachers and that will only damage the teacher shortage even more. The article, “Yes on 55 school claim misses the mark”, by Chris Nichols, an author for the online website of Politifact.com states that these cuts would…

Proposition 64 has been passed and many people are in the wrong believing that legalizing Marijuana for people over 21 is a better option rather than having Marijuana being completely illegal to all age groups aside for medical purposes. In actuality, Proposition 64 will make matters worse since children and pets would now have access to it, it is lacking a DUI standard, it won’t get rid of the black market, and there’s a possibility that the amount of car accidents related to being high on Marijuana to increase. Therefore Proposition 64 will cause more issues and problems in California. Californians who voted in favor of Proposition 64 will now have to be aware that this will expose children to Marijuana in various methods. There are different types of deceiving…

Well it has been almost 4 months that I have been attending Roanoke Valley Early College. I love it here and I don’t see how anyone couldn’t. So far I have learned a lot about school. By taking time to observe my surroundings and everyone around me, I have learned that everyone in high school is not your friend and that I am learning how to sense a bad vibe before I let anyone get too close to me. RVEC is the only school that has taught me that all teachers are not these people that hate their job because the teachers here including the ones I don’t take yet are always showing us that they really want to be there and help us and teach us.…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

INTRODUCTION Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been and are critical drivers of social mobility and social change in the Black community. Since their founding they have had missions to provide access and opportunity for Black people when they were excluded or denied admittance elsewhere. Today, HBCUs continue close the societal and economic gaps that exist for Black people in America. HBCUs represent just three percent of institutions of higher education, enroll less than ten percent of African Americans in higher education, but graduate more than 17 percent of African American bachelor degrees and more than 24 percent of African American bachelor degrees in STEM fields (NCES, 2016).…

Like most people, the third grade was a highly intense time. This was the period in which you had to decipher between wanting to learn how to multiply or learn how to divide first. Or for me the most difficult decision may have been choosing between kickball and tetherball during recess. But I had an issue of seeing adults doing things and if it was simple I would do them too. For me as a child I had what many considered an old sold.…

On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the city of New Orleans, leaving in its wake flooding, destruction, death, and the collapse of a corrupt and bankrupt public school system (Polier, 2006). Katrina left the city of New Orleans without physical school structures, without school organization, and most significantly, without a population capable of paying taxes to fund new schools. In response to this problem and the existing problem of a bankrupt school system, the United States government offered substantial financial assistance to organizations and districts that would open charter schools (Garda, 2011). Hurricane Katrina was seen by some as a blessing to the New Orleans school district, allowing for a complete reconstruction and reform of education. The reform was seen as an opportunity to improve prominent race and class inequalities, along with issues centered on teachers and teacher…

Final Reflection Paper Core 104, Literature, Philosophy, and the Examined Life, impacts the students on ideas including morality and how to live in society. The ideas and texts presented allowed us all to question how others and ourselves act in the world around us, as well as how to understand how to balance our needs with the needs of others. In this course, it allowed me to think more deeply about pressing issues in our country and around the world, as well as make stronger arguments backed up with either quotes or sources. In this course, we had created a final video project that related to the contexts of differing points of view, and can relate to the trips and works we had studied. This project was performed in a random group of students…

This semester has been a very difficult, stressful, and challenging for me . High School can not compare the amount of stress I had to face in this fall semester at Hostos Community College. However, it is like that with many other students because making a transition is frightening and many of us find a way to run away from it. Everything in life is a challenge and it is scary as well, but for those who want to study it all starts of with college. It took me more than words to actually realize the reality that I am actually living right at this very moment because, I was not expecting so many things to fall apart, but somehow becoming whole again.…
