Health information technology has a great impact in underserved communities in improving the delivery of care. Enhancing health IT can address and have an impact on the quality of care, access to care, health outcomes and status, and patient engagement. Health IT tools can assist in the improvement of decision-making and aid in health education within communities so they are willing to learn more about their condition and health. Challenges may arise, but gaining awareness of those challenges while achieving principle goals is very important in accomplishing Holy Cross Health strategic plan of action.

Information regarding the electronic health record system is the main recommendation that should be included in the strategic plan of action since it’s the overall solution to many health IT factors, it serves to improve usability, patient care and the community health, as well as increase access to care. In order for Holy Cross Health to manage community health and improve health status effectively, users in all necessary fields need to experience error free health IT performance and minimum usability problems. Improving usability with health IT applications will provide effective and efficient patient information, including medication history.
In addition, health IT that integrated clinical workflow, like the electronic health record system, has the ability to improve quality of care, delivery of health care, care coordination, and patient safety while reducing health inequality. Holy Cross Health should have a workflow that utilizes health IT at its finest when caring for underserved communities. There have been many challenges in providing health services to help the underserved communities because of the scarcity of providers. Increasing telehealth and telemedicine would be a great improvement towards resolving unmet community health needs, health care delivery, and access of care while also reducing cost. Individuals’ main point of contact regarding their health will be through telehealth, as individuals will receive faster care and response time for any health problem(s) they may have without having to travel to the hospital.
