Genetics and fertility technology is always growing and moving at too fast of a pace to regulate. A big issue that has begun arising are “designer babies”. “The term was coined to denote children whose genetic characteristics have been artificially selected or modified to ensure specific intellectual and cosmetic characteristics.” (“Introduction to Designer Babies: The Issue” 2013). What this means is if you reach out to a fertility clinic, they are able to enhance the embryo to have any characteristics, whether it is appearance or intellectual characteristics. This term is called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, or PDG. This is an operation in which a doctor can see the embryo and any genetic defects before a woman is impregnated. I propose we keep progressing with the research because it is looking like it is helping diseases and stopping the inheritance of a disease. I feel this advancement may be used a bit excessive. I think that using the procedure to change hair color or gender, may be a bit unreasonable and I feel we should focus on the medical uses before we use it recreationally. I also suggest we should begin involving health insurance once we are sure this is working. We are still in the research phases, but once we can use this on a majority of the affected embryos and we can prove the effectiveness, this should be covered or assisted by health insurance companies. They would have to help with treatment later for the disease, so might as well pay to have the disease terminated. An example is a doctor can locate the gene of Huntington’s disease on a screening and take away the gene. He can then plant the embryo into the womb and if all goes correct, the child will be born normal without the Huntington’s
