Muhammad's father died during Muhammad's birth, around 570 C.E in Makkah, and he was sent away from his widowed mother who soon died after. This led to him becoming an orphan. His grandfather cared for him but after his death, he was in the care of his uncle, who was a merchant and the new leader of his family's poor clan. Muhammad started to accompany his uncle on trading journeys when he was 12 which led to him becoming a trader himself.
Muhammad began managing caravans for a woman named Khadijah, who soon proposed marriage. They had many children that continued on the bloodline.

Muhammad stayed a merchant but also cared for spiritual matters. He went to pray in a cave in 610 C.E, where he received a call to be a prophet. The Arabs called this Allah. Muhammad said that he was paid a visit from the angel Gabriel who told him to ¨recite¨ and that he was the messenger of God. Khadijah, his wife, told him that God chose him. Members of his clan become his followers too. Although, Most makkans rejected his teachings. Most people did not want to share their wealth, which is what Muhammad's teaching were trying to pass on along with other things. The teachings also disturbed Arabs who didn't want to give up their gods. As more and more people became Muslims, Makkah started a boycott. This went on for 3 years and the Hashim clan suffered. Although, all was hard for Muslims they did not break their will. In 619, Abu Talib, Muhammad's uncle, and Khadija died. Even though life seemed horrible for Muhammad, the Qur’an tells the story of the Night Journey. A winged horse takes Muhammad to Jerusalem, the place where early Muslims directed their prayers.
