Harry Potter by J.K Rowling contains a variety of magical elements and devices. One of these devices are the prophecy orbs mainly featured in the fifth book of the series, Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix. These orbs have connections not only to the characters in the series, but also to the politics of the real world.
The prophecy orbs are small balls of spun glass that contain a white, wisp-like mist. In The Order of the Phoenix, it is mentioned that these balls are stored in the Hall of Prophecy in the Ministry of Magic. The white, wisp-like mist in these orbs are prophecies for different people at different times. The prophecy orbs are …show more content…
The first character to hold a connection with the prophecy orb is Harry Potter himself. Harry is believed to be the chosen one who has the potential to defeat Voldemort. Harry and his group of friends are the ones to go and find it to prevent Voldemort and the Death Eaters from obtaining the orbs, so he obviously has a connection with the orbs. Another character that has connections to the orbs is obviously Voldemort. He tries to find the prophecy because he can use it for his plans to kill Harry and other people who won't follow him or are a threat to his plans. The prophecy orb describes who has the potential to foil his plans and defeat him, so that connects him to the orbs. They also relate to events and politics in the real world. There were several political styles that were shown in this book through the use of the prophecy orbs. One of those styles is realism. There are several actions and motives in this book that are theories and characteristics of realism-style politics. One of those characteristics is preemption. Voldemort's desire to kill Harry before Harry kills him is preemption. Preemption is the desire to do something to someone else before they can do it to you. That is Voldemort's mentality about killing Harry throughout not just this book, but the entire series. He is constantly plotting to get things or do things that will further his plans and eventually lead to him killing Harry. The desire to kill Harry comes from the prophecy because it details that somebody, who could potentially be Harry, has the potential to kill Voldemort. The prophecy orb also states that "...and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...". This statement indicates another theory of political realism which is the principle of competition. These two wizards are competing with each other to survive. There are several other theories and characteristics of political realism that were presented through the use of the prophecy orbs as devices, but the prophecy orbs are connected to other types of
