Radiation is formed by the instability of an atom either having too many or too few of and type of particles within an atom 's.These type of particles can be either having too many or too few electrons, neutrons or protons and you have a radioactive element.The element becomes unstable as each part holds another part on so having too few means that the link may be too weak to hold it together then having too many means there pushing others off the particles as there are too many attached to the main atom for them to share.Beta particles are formed when the neutron decays and forms an antineutrino particle which contains neutron and a few protons this then leaves a negatively charged beta particle due to the lack of neutrons to hold the particles together which will, in turn, throw the balance of the particles off making it unstable.Beta particles are shown by the symbol which shows that the beta particle has a charge of -1 this also give it an almost massless effect as well.Beta particles travel at very high speeds almost at the speed of light although it exact speed can vary.Alpha particles have the same structure as a helium nucleus of 2 neutrons and 2 protons.The alpha particle is the biggest and slowest of all 3 type of radiation.Gamma rays are formed when the nucleus have too much energy this is normally caused by a previous nuclear reaction the excess energy is thrown off in the then form of gamma rays as the nucleus is too unstable to be able to hold itself …show more content…
Ionisation is when atoms turn into ions via radiation during this process the radiation causes the atoms to lose their electrons making the ions positively charged there are two types of ionisation Direct and Indirect.
Direct ionisation can be caused by beta and alpha particles as they are both charged particles.due to this when either of these particles come near an atom the electrostatic force of the particle and if it is strong enough.The electron is pushed out of orbit around the atom allowing the electron to fly off freely from the atom resulting in the atom now being and ion and being positively charged.This electrostatic force can depend on the distance between the particle and the atom as the further away they are the weaker the electrostatic force will be.it also depends on the amount of energy the particle has as the more is has, the stronger the electrostatic force will be.This is shown by the equation E=V/d where it can be seen here as if the distance (d) increases then the force will become smaller whereas if the charge (V) increase then the field strength will become
