Body mechanics play an important role in any task you perform. Having good body mechanics is important because it keeps the body in good alignment and prevents stress of the joints, which helps to prevent conditions that can cause lower back or leg pain. For proper body mechanics you must have the “load” close to your body, trunk in an upright position, and use the muscles in the leg instead of the back (Early, 2013 pg 191).Proper body mechanics for the activity of tug of war, would be to stand in a staggered squat position, with one foot out while the other is lined up with the hip. Secondly, your trunk should be upright, even while pulling on the rope the trunk should remain in an upright position. Poor body mechanics would be to have your feet closer together, knees extended, and for the trunk to be in flexion when pulling the rope, which can cause lower back pain. Therefore, to have good body mechanics would be to make sure you have a wide stance, with one foot in front. Your knees should be in knee flexion, and your trunk should be in an upright position. Your shoulders should be flexed, and your wrist in ulnar deviation, when the rope is getting pulled in the opposite direction you must make sure to remain in good alignment when pulling the rope back. Keep your hands close to the rope and when pulling in try to keep your elbows tucked. Do not use the lower back muscles for the strength to pull the rope. Use the muscles in the arms as well as the legs. It is necessary to have good body mechanics so that you can protect your joints during activities and task every day.
