Assad and his officials have already proven that they are ruthless, power hungry, and capable. If they are to successfully smother the ambitions of the rebellion, they will not simply stop there. They will rise up beside their chief allies – Iran and Hezbollah, a militant Islamic Lebanese organization- to continue to act upon their cruel vendettas of ethnic, religious, and political purification that are directly opposed to the goals of democratic and civil rights groups. A significant factor of Assad’s vendetta is his hatred for the rebels who contend for his power. If he is allowed to capture rebel-controlled areas and effectively destroy their ability to produce resistance, he will likely be quick to exact revenge on the Sunni majority that has made his road to totalitarianism so difficult.
