The setting of this book is Nazi Germany when Hitler controlled the country and had power over all of the Jews and the Nazis. The protagonist in Markus’s book is a character named Liesel, a young girl whose brother had died on the way to the Hubermanns and that later found out her mother was a communist. Liesel was able to steal a book named The Grave Digger's Handbook during her brother’s funeral. Liesel was not able to read at all , she wanted to be able to read and understand especially what The Grave Digger's Handbook was about.
Liesel then met Hans Hubermann, a man who loved to smoke cigarettes and play the accordion and also taught Liesel how to pronounce and read words from the book which helped her understand them by writing them down in the wall of …show more content…
