Broadcasting rebellious acts on live television can be harmful for the government and weaken the oppressing system at the same time, thus editing out certain events of the Hunger Games becomes necessary. Early on in the 74th Hunger Games Katniss forms an alliance with Rue, the tribute from District 11, however, Rue is later murdered. To demonstrate that the Games did not turn either Rue or herself into a killer like they turned the other tributes, Katniss arranges a symbolic funeral for Rue, which shows her compassion. From the Capitol’s perspective, the aim of the events that take place in the Arena could be summarised as follows: “the tributes are maneuvered through a series of deliberate encounters designed by the Gamemakers to maximize spectator engagement” (Mortimore-Smith 159). The spectators mentioned above are the citizens of the Capitol. As Mortimore-Smith puts it, the audience guarantees that “the Games continue year after year” therefore the Gamemakers have the responsibility to ensure and increase the level of engagement of the viewers in the Games (159). Cameras record every tribute in the arena, however, which tribute is actually on television depends on whether the tribute’s current narrative is exciting enough for the viewers or not because what influences the Games’ progress the most is the audience’s response to what they see on their television screens (Wright 100). Thus, when the action, such as fights or murders become sparse in the arena and the tributes have scattered, the Gamemakers can create natural disasters like forest fire in The Hunger Games or tidal wave, blood rain and poisonous fog in Catching Fire to draw the tributes together, which would hopefully result in confrontation. Some view it as entertainment, some as a sporting event while many as inevitable destruction. The Gamemakers are able to modify and manipulate the Hunger Games and decide what kind of narrative to tell but they cannot control the effect of it and how the wide audience perceives this
