Elements of Propaganda in a Dystopian Society.
Veronica Roth states, “We cannot be confined to one way thinking, and that terrifies our leaders. It means we can’t be controlled. And it means that no matter what they do, we will always cause trouble for them.” In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, the narrator depicts characters that live in a dystopian future, which is, an illusion of a perfect society maintained through oppressive societal controls, which shows propaganda playing an important role. Mildred describes, “Well, this is a play comes on the wall-to wall circuit in ten minutes... They write the script with one part missing it’s a new idea. When it comes time for the missing lines, they all look at me out of the three walls and I say the lines…The man says, ‘What do you think of this whole idea, Helen?’… I say, I think that’s fine!’…Do you agree to that Helen?’ and I say, I sure do!’ Isn’t that fun Guy? (20). The TV announcer has transformed her opinion into something that is agreeable and automatic. Mildred does not realize how this propaganda has manipulated her. This is why she wants another wall, put in. One of the negative consequences is that it will cost Montag, both time and money, because he will have to work to put in another TV parlor wall, which is one third of a firemen’s yearly pay, with a spot wavex scrambler, which is an accessory, that costs one hundred dollars. Furthermore, we see propaganda, not only in this dystopian society, but also operating in our society. An idea of visual propaganda is one by, W. D. Haywood, he created a poster that states, the worst thief is he who steals the playtime of children. Showing, young children working hard while a large and obese man looks on with bags of money at his feet. It characterizes him as stealing their innocence and childhood, due to the incredibly dangerous environment, on the jobs they were forced to work, in order to keep food on the table for themselves and their families, while being paid incredibly small amounts of
