This information is usually vocalized by the government itself. In 1984, Big Brother attempts in multiple ways to influence their ways and control the society, just like the American government does. There are multiple ways that both spread and feed propaganda to their citizens. In 1984, the poster of Big Brother was explained within the first few pages. “It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. Big Brother Is Watching You, the caption beneath it ran.” (Orwell, George) Big Brother is not a real man, but is a figure that was to be looked at as a role model, and was a promotion of their government as a whole. Big Brother was propaganda fed to the people to influence their word, and to get their citizens on their side. This is similar to the society today, but with the slightest difference. In today’s society, Uncle Sam plays a role as positive figure for the American people. Both men were a symbol for their governments and country, and an attempt to win its citizens “vote”. “He reassures viewers that war is not in America 's lifeblood; the nation, like its uncle, would rather be doing something else.” (Capozolla, Christopher) Though the quote may appear irrelevant to the comparison of the two books, it is actually very relevant. In both societies, today’s as well as the society in 1984, the government uses different techniques to control its society, and the people within it. They want to have complete social control over its people and their thoughts, which is why both societies have governments that do these things. The government is far more powerful than its people in both societies, and have the ability to control their citizens. In both societies, the governments usually do exactly what American ex-president Ronald Reagan believed a government should NOT. “Government’s first duty is to protect the people, not ruin their lives.”
