Prop 65 Argument Analysis

Decent Essays
An overwhelming number of arguments accumulate when the issue at hand deals with money and the environment. In support the primary argument is the fact that this measure would result in money directed toward conservation efforts. Currently stores are charging their customers money for each bag they use, and when dealing with weekly grocery trips this results in a significant amount of money. Funds that grocery stores are able to spend at their own discretion. Considering the amount of change bag policies has undergone in recent years, many stores are able to use this revenue stream without fear of consequences. Proponents argue that this proposition would force grocery stores to be fiscally responsible for the harm their bags do to the environment …show more content…
With a renewed desire to see change, legislators are at odds with raising the appropriate funding for conservation efforts. With the passing of this prop, a designated fund would become available with the goal of improving the state’s environment. Opponents argue against this measure because of the effect it would have on the grand scheme of pollution. The primary concern of the parties against this measure is the confusion it seems to be spreading among Californian voters. Prop 65 has been argued as a measure meant to decrease the chance of proposition 67 passing. Voters see prop 65 as a way of getting necessary funding for the environment and will not vote appropriately to uphold the plastic bag ban. Grocery stores would also face increased costs on providing their customers with expensive multi-use bags. This expense would have to be compensated in other areas, like increasing prices on store goods. This measure therefore also comes at a price to consumers. Also this proposition would do nothing to change the plastic bag problem facing California’s environment. Allowing stores to continue providing single-use bags results in a continuation of plastic bags polluting the land and water throughout the state of

The argument required more for credibility. Summers needed data to counter the other issues that were against his opinion. The reusable bag is an alternative to plastic, an alternative with more problems than benefits. Summer addresses this but gave statistical data on this countering opinion. “San Francisco’s plastic bag ban in 207 resulted in a subsequent spike in hospital emergency room visits due to E.coli, salmonella, and campylobacter-related intestinal infectious diseases.”…

A Supreme court considers having corporations to have a first amendment right to use an unlimited amount of money for influencing elections. The current president denounced it during a state of the union address while having many Justices present. A poll was found that it should be overturned. Proposition 55 should be passed because of the fact that the school system would receive funding from $4 billion to $9 billion. This funding will prevent cuts in school budget as well as cuts in extracurricular activities. According to “Can Gov. Jerry Brown keep the promises he made with Proposition 30?”, an article by Chris Megerian in the LA Times, “education funding could face billions of dollars in cuts, said Jennifer Wonnacott, a spokeswoman for this year’s tax campaign.” These cuts mean that the first cuts to be made will be the teachers and that will only damage the teacher shortage even more. The article, “Yes on 55 school claim misses the mark”, by Chris Nichols, an author for the online website of Politifact.com states that these cuts would…

Recently, there has been an argument in the State of Texas about the power of the State and the local governments. This argument had raised up after Gregg Abbott warned about the “Californization” of Texas, and in follow passing laws that limited the power of local governments on issues like fracking in their cities. These arguments are similar to those that are for the powers for the State versus Federal government. Hence, there are lots of arguments for and against the local control, and on the other hand, it is hypocritical for the state government to impose its will on the policies.…

We may have committed crimes during our youthful years, some bigger than others. While the punishment that came along with those crimes may have been little to no punishment at all, that’s not the case with fifteen year old Charles Andy Williams and fourteen year old Lionel Tate. William’s, who was involved in a fatal shooting spree in Santana High School, and Tate who was involved in the wrestling death of his six year old playmate were both sentenced to life in prison under California’s proposition 21 law. This law states that any juvenile offender 14 years of age or older who commits a violent crime or a serious sex offense for the most part, are no longer eligible for juvenile court. Prosecutors are allowed to directly file charges against juvenile offenders in adult court for a…

Plastic bags are everywhere, but how much do they cost? How much are they worth? In California, they passed a law where plastic bags cost $0.10 per bag. I believe that plastic bags should be 10¢ per bag because it is helping the environment. Ever since August 2014, California has been the first to enact legislation striking a statewide on single-use plastic bags at large retail stores.…

The ten amendments in the Bill of Rights has a freedom that many in other countries don’t know of and can only wish for. In the Constitution, whoever is born on American soil is automatically an American citizen. However, the citizen of present-day colonies/ territories like American Samoa and Guam don’t get the same right as American citizens, even though they are born on American soil. Humes begins his novel by describing landfills and the struggles many face with maintaining them due to incorrect sealing, being uneducated in waste management, and making excuses. Humes determines that the only way to “fix” our mess is to change our behaviors and become less wasteful. In part one of Humes novel, Garbology, he informs readers of the landfill, Puente Hills, the largest active dump in the country, and the hazardous materials, such as “leachate”, that is infecting the area of Los Angeles County (25).…

Plastic bags make it so much easier to carry our groceries as compared to paper bags. Plastic wrappers do not stick to the food product and can be disposed of without taking up much. Utensils made of plastics make cleaning up easier, because they can just be thrown away. All of these luxuries have come from the invention of using plastics to make disposables, but such disposable items are not disposable in the sense that they are hard to break down. Thus, the “luxuries” actually made me realize the dangers of overusing plastics, leading me to look into the environment and how humans are harming the environment outside of plastic…
