Prompt 13-2: Portfolio

Improved Essays
I chose to include prompt 13-2 in this portfolio because I learned the most that week about how little I understand people. I have always been one to try and see things from someone else’s point of view but, after writing that prompt, I realized that I was actually pretty ignorant about how others view problems. There is not one defining event or moment that dictates how one views things rather, it is a messy series of life events that shape the world through each persons’ eyes. Understanding this will help me going forward in that, I will be more thorough in research and also more open minded about what I am researching. I have also learned that just because I am reading or researching one topic, that does not mean it is the only topic within that book or paper. This further understanding of people will also help me in my education and career as a Graphic Designer. Opening my mind about how others view my work will help me in being able to work with …show more content…
It took quite a bit of reflection on my part to grasp how people with completely different deep stories could find a kind of common ground. This prompt taught me about myself and how my life experiences have changed the way I see the world. Learning about myself also made it easier for me to understand the impact that other peoples’ stories have on their lives. I have learned how to put myself in someone else’s shoes, even when I do not agree with their thoughts and beliefs. Reading about the deep stories in Hochschild’s book and those of my classmates has given me a new passion to understand people which, I think, will benefit me in my design work. As a Graphic Designer, I not only need to know the technicalities of design but, also the stories behind a design. The better I am able to understand that, the better I will be able to create pieces that resonate with a client’s own story and that makes all the difference in having them want to

Significant personal events in one’s life can act to influence an individual’s artmaking practice. This is evident through Frida Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ 1944, Jenny Sages ‘After Jack’ 2012 and Christian Thompson ‘King Billy’ 2010. Frida Kahlo, is the first example of such an individual as she experienced a horrible accident causing permanent damage to her spine. As a result of the accident, Kahlo became influenced to paint through using her emotion as a driving force to paint where Kahlo states “I am broken, but I am happy as long as I can paint”. This is depicted in Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ in plate 4 which depicts a figure namely Kahlo herself being pricked by nails with the presence of a broken pillar.…

For my third portfolio, I decided to brainstorm some ideas of what a person can do to restore themselves in under five minutes. The first idea I came up with was to eat a snack. Eating a snack allows for a person to take a break from doing work, and to enjoy the salty or sweet flavor of their favorite treat. While presenting my portfolio, I had snack bags that contained Hershey Kisses, lollypops, and …… available for observers to take home and enjoy, when they need a few minutes to restore themselves. The second idea that I came up with was to create a stress relief ball.…

Fine storytelling, no matter how short the story, can aid in teaching complex lessons in a simple manner. Some stories teach these lessons in the form of a theme through the use of symbolism. “Popular Mechanics” by Carver and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Stetson are tales of grim relationship problems featuring symbolism to portray themes of everyday life. Both stories quickly reveal that life for the main characters is problematic. Both stories feature problems between two different couples, one being a marriage, the other being a mother and father.…

As a species of over seven billion, it is often hard to experience something truly unique or exclusivehing exclusive from that of the experiences of others; ; however, it is those experiences that not only separate us from each other, but also helps to define the core personality of each and every one of us. Exclusive events, good or bad, are the spawn of different sets of factors that influence one: an activity, a job, education, etc. Thomas Hardy, a famous novelist, once said that only stories which are exceptional and unordinary are worth telling. Marcus Luttrell, author of the narrative Lone Survivor, used his unique experience being a Navy…

Final Portfolio Cover Letter I have always enjoyed writing so I feel like classes such as these help me more than others. Before I finish college I hope to take some sort of creative writing class as I feel as I haven’t given that opportunity much in recent years amidst constant essays on topic that I do not care about. I also feel as though I’m very good at writing about things I am passionate about and if I care about a topic you will be able to clearly tell when reading what I wrote.…

Imagine living in a fantasy world where everything is pitch perfect the way you wanted to be, but then, you wake up to the harsh reality to feel trapped and animated on the inside. This is how I first view my life story for the last three years. At first, I never thought this class would help me realize who I am nor what I have to value until eight weeks ago. To start off, I have looked at my life in a new light and sees how I should understand others before I judge them, as well as, to understand the importance of morals and values. Everyone has their own values and morals that they believe in to determine what is right and wrong in life, so have I. Not everyone can agree to the same stuff about how one’s should live our life, but instead learn from our value and believe to make our own story in our life.…
