Potential barriers exist within the development of a home-school partnership with diverse families. These roadblocks can include cultural differences and lack of communication channels from home to school. To encourage and foster an all-inclusive partnership with diverse families’ educators must initiate and sustain a two-way communication channel through collaborative approach and consider cultural differences.

Prior to gaining an understanding of others cultural needs it’s necessary to first understand one’s own racial heritage. Cultural competence on behalf of the educator begins with evaluation of oneself. This personal evaluation brings to surface awareness of the individuals beliefs and values along with any preconceived notions as well as biases. The second phase of this process is seeking first to understand the others persons worldwide view. The third, becoming an individual that develops and practices strategies and skills that is relevant, supportive, and sensitive to the needs of the families being serviced. This process is necessary for educators to undergo to recognize and understand different cultural differences while respecting the values of
