The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun, was an inspiring novel about the struggles of achieving your dream. Adam Braun, unsatisfied with his meaningless life at 25, developed the courage to find his true purpose in life. The result of his chase for purpose Adam created Promise of Pencil, a nonprofit charity that has now built more than 250 schools in underdeveloped countries. While reading this novel Adam awakened my long lost dream of traveling and making a difference in the world. A dream I have always had but as I grew up was overshadowed by day to day struggles I faced. I am now inspired to take time out of my busy schedule to volunteer at a local shelter and save enough money to travel this summer and experience the world. As inspiring …show more content…
Adam stated “Our culture glorifies founders and CEOs far too often, when in fact the early adopters and evangelists are actually the ones who make a company’s success possible”. In order to achieve success others are needed to help push you forward. Whether it’s your parents, teachers, or friends. Everyone in your life makes an impact in your future. Which is why they say it is important to choose your friends wisely. The beginning of my junior year, I was still a bit clueless about the true meaning of friendship. I became friends with others that never really had my best interest in mind. You can almost say they were very selfish and never had a positive attitude. When surrounded by negativity your life soon becomes negative. I cared less and less about school. I didn’t focus on college or how important deadlines were because my current friends never really did. Yet, one day it all hit me. I didn’t feel like I had true friends. I quickly separated myself from that group a couple months later and focused on new healthy friendships. By surrounding myself with good and positive people they showed me the potential I truly had and inspired me to push forward. Although I now pay for the mistakes I made then, I am more focused than ever to succeed and follow my dreams all thanks to the support I know I have by those I am surrounded

As time has progressed, analyzing the concepts of hope and setting goals has helped us create an understanding of how, why, and what it takes for people to succeed. One example of a nonfiction book that helps make a connection to hope is Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel Pink. By connecting hope and Pink’s novel together, hope supports Pink’s claim that autonomy, mastery, and purpose motivate people, helping them achieve and be successful.…

Neyda Borges is the author of “Why The Debate Over Cursive Is About More Than Penmanship”, an online article published in the StateImpact section of the NPR website. In this article, Borges discusses the debate about removing cursive handwriting from a school’s curriculum and whether or not it seems more than it is. She mentions how the real issue is not about teaching penmanship but that different socio-economic statuses affect many students in different ways and widen the “achievement gap.” She also argues that cursive is not the only thing that has been removed from the curriculum; other things such as learning grammar are no longer a part of it as well. Cursive is just one underlying symbol that leads back to one main issue: the advantages…

In his book What’s Wrong with the World, G.K. Chesterton states “If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.” Chesterton does not mean that if saving lives is worth doing, we should all run around with no medical knowledge trying to save lives, or that if our room needs cleaning, it is okay to clean it poorly. What he means is that if the more important things in life are worth doing, it is okay to do them poorly because it is more important that we do them rather than not do them at all. Up until my freshman year, I was a living a life that could be summed up in a version of the quote that would say “If a thing is worth doing, I should avoid it and someone else can do it instead because I am not the right person to be doing this thing.”…

However, the main point is colleges should produce writers who can actually use writing as a source for their future jobs and the questions is how can they do that? For example, I want to major in biology. Even though I major in biology, writing would be important to become more successful in my future career. One good way would be giving students an assignment where they require them to write papers on subjects of their choice that have something to do with biology.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Unlike the Mexican-American families Rios described my funds of knowledge I obtained from my family and friends did not pertain to working or holding an occupation. I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
