The Wrongs and Rights of Ego in Society
“The word which can never die on this earth, for it is the heart of it and the meaning and the glory. The sacred word: Ego” (Rand 123). In the conclusion of Anthem, Prometheus refers to ego as a holy word that defines his newfound independence, but this can’t be entirely true because in modern society the opposite is true. The common man refers to ego as arrogance. How can there be two different outlooks on ego, when realistically, there should be a singular definition? The answer is society. Let’s start with Prometheus’s society. The government that quite literally controls him leaves no room for free thinking, so wouldn’t ego be a breath of fresh air? On the other hand, modern society today is based

Turning a good book into a great book is a pressing task, and Ayn Rand, the author of Anthem, wrote a great novel. Everything from the storyline, to the word choice was carefully chosen. Although some ideas presented in this book are far fetched, there are still many ideas that tie Anthem to the real world. The most prominent connections to today are the similarities to some quotes and the Bible and some quotes to patriotic pieces (ex. National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance). The quote I found most intriguing in the book Anthem was, “We are nothing.…

While researching Isis on the Ancient History Encyclopedia Web site, I found it interesting that she wore a headdress of an empty throne after her husband Osiris was murdered. I think this is an important detail to know because it shows her devotion to her husband, even after his death. I also really found it interesting the details provided about how Isis was able to find a pillar, created by the tree that kept dead Osiris inside. Unfortunately, even though she was able to cut her dead husband from the pillar and carry him back to Egypt, while she looked for herbs to make a potion to bring him back to life, his brother cut Osiris to pieces and scattered them across the land. I think these are important details because the book gave a high-level…

The story of Prometheus giving fire to man is one that could be interpreted to teach a few different life lessons; however, I believe the most accurate one is that the story of Prometheus is trying to teach that you should always do what you feel is right. Prometheus did what he felt was right to protect and aid the humans he had so painstakingly created. “When Prometheus finished his work and saw his creatures shivering in the cold, dark night, terrified of the many powerful beasts his brother had created, his heart ached. He could not bear the sight of their suffering, and so he decided he must return to Olympus to ask Zeus for another gift.…
