Prometheus Fire Symbolism Essay

Symbolic Importance Fire is the first and most obvious symbol of Prometheus. This is because he stole fire and gave it to humankind against the will of Zeus. Fire, in this case, symbolizes intelligence and progress. Without fire, humans would not be able to technologically advance and the hope that Prometheus gave them would serve no purpose (Chevalier, 772). Fire is also widely known as a symbol of pain. In Prometheus’s legend, for bringing fire to humans he was chained to the Caucasus Mountains where he suffered in agony his liver being torn out each day. So, in turn, fire brought Prometheus pain and therefore can be recognized as a symbol of pain in this case. As well, if both symbolic meanings of fire are combined, one can imply that as humans progress and develop thanks to fire, they will also use fire to inflict pain or create weapons using the fire which would disrupt their peaceful lifestyle. This makes Prometheus a symbol of progress backfiring. Proof of this is when Prometheus ensured humans would eat meat and sacrifice the bones; but due to that, Zeus took away fire so humans had no way to cook the meat. The colours …show more content…
Prometheus was constantly at odds with Zeus, and endured severe punishment for giving fire to humans. Zeus punished Prometheus through humankind as well, by indirectly unleashing all evils on the world. Symbolism related to Prometheus can be found in fire, the colours of fire, punishment, trickery, forethought or intelligence, progress, rebellion, garlands, and camaraderie. Prometheus is perfect to endorse “Fight-Me-Not Flames” because he has gone through hardship that could have been avoided with the use of this candle. Prometheus teaches everyone that, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few” (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), and, “If you play with fire you’re gonna get burned” (unknown

In Hesiod’s Theogony Zeus is not a just God to his people in the way that he punishes everyone for the acts that only one man committed, rather than just punishing a single individual. For example, Zeus is an extremely vengeful God and this is displayed at the Trick at Mecone as well as in the creation of Pandora. At the Trick at Mecone when Prometheus deceives Zeus by placing a pile of ox beef disguised in intestines and a pile of bones disguised in shiny fat for Zeus to choose from so the Gods and the mortals can negotiate the sacrifice that will be given (Hesiod, Theogony, 540-543), Zeus becomes angry at Prometheus for his trickery and not only punishes Prometheus for deceiving him but “wouldn’t give the power of weariless fire to the…

The symbolism of fire can represent knowledge, awareness, rebirth, and destruction. The use of fire was first questioned when Guy Montag first met Clarisse McClellen and she brought up a new thought for what the purpose of fire could be used for; "Is it true that long ago firemen put fires out instead of going to start them?"(8). Guy Montag could only help but laugh thinking to himself how silly that idea could be but later questioning the possibility because all he knew was fire was meant for the destruction of books but couldn 't think of…

When reading 1984 by George Orwell, the first thing that becomes apparent is the near-omnipresent use of symbolism. By using symbolism throughout the novel, George Orwell paints a bleak future that could very well become a reality. From a totalitarian corrupt government to brainwashed citizens and surveillance that blankets the world, the dystopian future depicted in 1984 could easily become our future if we are not careful, and George Orwell wants to make sure that it doesn’t. By placing symbols throughout the book that warn of the perils of a dystopian future, Orwell did all he could to warn us of an unfortunate, yet possible reality.…

Prometheus stole fire from the gods (he reached too far) and was punished for it, just as Victor overreaches by playing God and creating life and is then punished for it. Victor finally seems to succumb to the idea of a higher power, “ I trod heaven in my thoughts, now exulting in my powers, now burning with the idea of their effects. From my infancy I was imbued with high hopes and a lofty ambition. (Shelly 597)”. He’s admitting that he denounced any higher power and believed to be seated in his own divine throne.…
