Prom Is A Rite Of Passage

Think about Prom. What is it? Listen to me. I will tell you. Literally, Prom is a dance. Yet, when you look beneath the surface, Prom is a rite of passage. Hear me out. I am a teenage girl, the worst and best times of my life are happening now. I have never been to Prom myself, yet I have heard many things both positive and negative. Listen as I recall. Listen without bias. It is where dreams come true and hopes are dashed. It becomes a memory that cradles you as you cry yourself to sleep or it is the ghost that paints a smile on your face without you noticing. Imagine being swept off your feet and treated like a princess. Imagine being humiliated and taunted like a wild beast in a cage. Both examples are possible at Prom. Listen to me as I warn you. Prom is not always a fairytale, sometimes it is a night-terror. Overall, Prom is not just one night of dancing; it is a major life event which is so complex it cannot be defined in one …show more content…
Anxiety is when you are panicking, breathing heavy, and wanting to cry for no specific reason. Prom gives you anxiety. You panic about the perfect hair, dress, shoes, nails, makeup, and date. You must have them all. Otherwise who are you? You are the girl with nothing. The heavy breathing starts in when you realize the date of the dance is getting closer and closer and your patience is spreading thinner and thinner. The need to remember everything drives you up the wall. Trying to remember what date your dress gets delivered and when to get it altered to actually fit you. Trying to remember the time of the dance and how much it is to get in. Trying to remember when and where the dinner reservations are, and how expensive that will be. Trying to remember what group you are going with and if your date has all of his things bought and ready. Towards the end when everything has now turned into a last minute project, it takes all of your strength not to cry. All the anxiety is enough to make some just give up and not

High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. It is a major time of growth for adolescents and serves as a stepping stone into the adult world, giving students the skills and experiences needed to be successful later in life. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

At the beginning of Prom Night in Mississippi, I was absolutely baffled and shocked by all the rules and lies, used to separate both races in Charleston, Mississippi. Certain lies and rules such as, whites suspecting that all blacks behold a gun; both races should not be seen hanging out together etc. For example in the documentary a white and black girl assimilated in a conflict, where the white girl claimed that the black girl had a gun and had intentions to use it against her. Or Jessica, a white student, being punished by her stepfather for having a black friend. In 1992, Morgan Freeman, a famous actor from Charleston, Mississippi, arrived to Charleston high school where he offered to pay all the expenses for an integrated prom, but his…

Poetry Comparison and Explication Sharon Olds is one of many poets who has developed an intimate relationship with the art of poetry with her play on words. The typical subject matter of Sharon Olds’ poetry includes the following: gender, childhood, growing up, sex, and the body. Two poems covered in class that share a similar theme are “Rite of Passage” and “The One Girl at the Boys’ Party.” The theme expressed in both poems are youthful growing up; however, Sharon Olds approaches this theme differently with her use of connotation and imagery to describe the children’s road towards maturity.…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

Since my high school Creative Writing class will be an elective class that will consist of students in tenth through twelfth grade, I will need to find ways to bring student fun into the learning as much as possible. I have found that students love to eat and socialize, so I will include food, props, and games whenever possible. Difficulty will occur as the norm for class size at my school is thirty-two to thirty-six students, and not all students want to be in the classes where they are assigned. Since a text will not be available for the students, handouts and overhead projections of terminology and examples of writings will be needed. Keeping the class light and the learning fun and engaging at all times will be my goals.…

We’ve always been told “Be yourself no matter what”, but in some situations we can’t always express who we are. In most cases it is good to act in a different way so you don’t disrespect someone or their culture in an attempt to “be yourself”. Society today has certain expectations for our behavior. Even though it might not be publically shown, we all consciously know that there are judgments being passed on our behaviors, which cause people to act on how they think other people, see them. Dramaturgical perspective is the theory that behaviors are changed in certain situations at certain times and in front of certain people.…

Reflecting on my reaction to my prom experience, I noticed a change within my own mindset. If I had been in this situation with my previous mindset, I would probably have felt guilty and thought he was right, that maybe I did not give him enough. But now, I know that I did not owe him anything. Accepting his prom proposal does not mean that I need to engage in any “implied” activities after the dance. It does not mean that I agreed to fulfill all his wishes and fantasies of how prom night would go.…
