Prolotherapy Essay

Prolotherapy is a procedure of treating the musculoskeletal system connective tissue injuries by injecting a natural irritant into the soft tissue of a certain injured joint. It is believed that doing so provides significant relief from back pain or joint pain.

Why is Prolotherapy Treatment Performed?
Prolotherapy treatment is performed when the connective tissue injuries have not healed by nonsurgical therapies or rest. The purpose of this treatment is to relieve the back pain that a patient feels. The prolotherapy treatment done via injection is also considered to promote the healing response in weakened tissue and in small tears of the musculoskeletal system.

One of the prolotherapy advantages is also helping to improve the overall function and movement of the joints and the back. Since this treatment is all-natural, it will rely on the body to reduce pain and repair itself.

The Prolotherapy Disadvantages
Although rare, there are few reported side effects of the prolotherapy treatment. The worst possible side effect is developing an infection at the injected site. The infection will result in pain and fever and is normally easy to treat with the use of antibiotics. Part of the prolotherapy disadvantages is the temporary pain or swelling at the injected area.

There are no extensive researches yet about prolotherapy so this may mean that there could be other side effects that are yet to be discovered. Another potential concern is one that involves using sugar in the treatment process. Some doctors believe that the buildup of sugar in the affected joint may cause damage to the patient’s joint and it may have a long-term effect. However, this theory is also not shown or proven.

If a shift occurs, the chiropractor realigns the spinal column to restore proper movement and allow the cerebrospinal fluid to move freely within the intercommunicating channels that house the cerebrospinal fluid.…
