Prologue To The Giver

Transmitting Friendship
The Giver placed his hand on Jonas’s back and Jonas was once again brought to a new memory, different than what he is used to. Jonas remembered this place, he had been somewhere like this before. He felt a soft towel underneath him and his hands were sinking into the grainy, brownish, smooth sand.The sky was dark and gloomy, but the sunset made up for it. Jonas remembered. The beach, but it was nothing like the first memory he was given. The wind was blowing cold, harsh air, the sand was smooth, but also hitting his body like tiny pellets from the wind. He would have thought this was going to be a scary or hurtful memory, but his ideas changed when he saw two girls running down the sand in unusual outfits. They were wearing some type of shirt, much like his cloak, but thicker. Jonas thought of words to describe the object, he thought warmth. He recalled The Giver calling it a sweatshirt. They were just laughing and their eyes were filled with excitement and happiness. Their cheeks were red and their hair was soaked. Jonas watched as the girls splashed the water on each other. The brunette jumped into the water and came up shivering, but still happy. The girls played in the ocean for a while, which was confusing to Jonas. He wondered why anyone would want to go into the water when it was frigid outside, but after watching the girls he realized it didn't matter the weather, the girls were just happy to have each other and be together. They finally got out of the water and ran back to their things. As they ran, their toes lifted the sand and it shot out behind them. The girls were still laughing, though their lips were blue and there faces were red. They were shivering and shaking, but didn't mind. They both reached down for a towel and wrapped the large towel around
