Prokofiev's Third Piano Concert

Improved Essays
Softly and slowly, a single clarinet is playing the main theme. The piece then gradually builds in volume, from one clarinet to two, and from the two clarinets to the entire string division. It then abruptly changes to a fast theme, the violinists playing the melody and the cellists plucking the accompaniment. At the end of a short upward scale, the piano comes in hot and heavy. And then I jump and gasp for air.
My parents and I are on a road trip to New England, and the first day of driving is not over yet, even though the sun set about an hour and a half ago. We have listened to Sirius XM channel 76, Symphony Hall, for the entire drive today. I suddenly get excited, since Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto just started. While I am certainly a lover of all classical music, I hold this piece in particularly high esteem, since

Regardless of my emotional connection with the piece and the wonderful rendering of it by the famed pianist Yuja Wang, I am starting to feel drowsy. Just then, my father, a fanatic of rock, changes the channel to a heavy metal channel, and I no longer hear clarinets, violins, cellos, and pianos, but rather loud, wailing electric guitars, booming bass drums, and hoarse, yelling voices. Since I have been rather sensitive to sudden, loud, and dissonant noises for my entire life, I almost jump out of my skin. The display reads “Bad to the Bone – George Thorogood and the Destroyers.” The song ends, and then another awful one starts up; this time it is “Holiday in Cambodia” by the Dead Kennedys. I cannot tolerate it anymore. I ball my hands into fists and bite my lower lip. My lower eyelids squeeze up. Finally, I cannot hold in the tirade anymore. “Why did you change the channel? I thought you agreed this morning when we left to actually listen to my

This piece begins with a tranquil woodwind choir with other instruments gradually joining in. The tempo is andante, as it is moderately slow, yet more of a simple pace. This work takes advantage of dynamics heavily, as it varies from pianissimo with a solo flute to a gorgeous and strong fortissimo dynamic of the whole ensemble. This piece also varies in texture quite a bit, as it alternates between monophonic soloist sections and grand homophonic sections of the whole band. Most of the melodic lines are smooth and legato, yet are disrupted by the pointed and staccato figures of the percussion section that underscore the longer lines of the wind instruments.…

Two violins, one viola, and a cello played Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet, Op. 76, No.3 (Emperor), II in quadruple meter and in the form of one homophonic theme with four polyphonic variations. The theme is introduced by the entire quartet in an conjunct melody that has three unique phrases. The first phrase, “A”, is the first to be introduced and repeated a second time, “A-A”. Phrase “A” moves smoothly from mid to high in ascending and descending conjunct intervals and is repeated.…

The 1st movement is kind of Sonata-Allegro form. The opining melody of the first movement was soft and slow with a touch of melancholy and I love this type. It starts with a softly-lovely flute and then the violins with strings accompanying. The violins are way up in the high part of their pitch which making it more refreshing. The tempo is not fast at the beginning, but then it become faster a little bit with violins.…

ou might say they pulled out the stops at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert on Friday. There were many engaging moments in the Cincinnati Symphony's unique program hailing the French organ tradition in Music Hall. But Louis Langrée’s direction of the famous “Poco adagio” in Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3, “Organ,” was truly magical. At the Allen organ, Thierry Escaich’s tones provided a soft, rich carpet under the lustrous sounds of the Cincinnati strings. It was serene and moving, and Music Hall’s spacious, almost cathedral-like acoustics couldn’t have been more ideal.…

Every day, I try to listen to a new piece of music. Whether it be a string group, unaccompanied choir, or even a percussion consort, I believe that by doing this, so much can be learned from just listening. About the mid-month of July, I came across this piece of music. I thought it was extremely fun and quirky at the same time! I had continued to listen to it, read some background information on the piece, and do a small amount of study on the work.…

Her instrument raises with the director’s wand and she rests her reed against her bottom lip, waiting, excitement taking over. Her hands gently embrace the wooden shell, and her fingertips kiss the silver keys as the first notes drip from the bell of the clarinet like honey off of a spoon. Each note connects to the next, having a solid, smooth melody which makes Clara sway in her seat, enjoying every moment. Every staccato and crescendo is portrayed beautifully through her tone, forming to each individual piece she plays to let listeners know the movements meaning.…

For most, it could be a god given talent like playing a sport or a desire to create something out of junk, but for the musicians, it’s their literature and music. A vast majority of the living society want to perish because they see their family members or their dearest friends dying off. Overcoming the jarring reality of the post-pandemic world, the Traveling Symphony plays their hearts out creating music and allowing themselves to take breaks from the harsh reality that surrounds them. With great emotion, Miranda states, “’I’d prefer not to think that I’m following a script…’” (Mandel 106).…

The song starts off with a strong collection with the brass section taking the lead as though one were about to embark on a long adventure. The song builds up as the adventure begins. Early on, the adventure is troubled by rough terrains, and eventually violins sound sparatically seeming to signify rough weather conditions. The weather clears and the brass section starts to signify progress as the adventure goes on. The violins once again gain speed as more troubles seem to come this way.…

The flutes play the melody in m. 48, which is an echo of what the violins previously played, and involves the same lower neighbor and turning motifs. However, the melody turns higher than the first phrase, reaching up to F#6 before descending stepwise. The horns and clarinet in A join in at m. 50 with an ascending third and descending whole steps. The violins once again have the melody at a higher register in m. 52, starting on E6, as if about to start a third phrase. Then, in m. 53, the second violin imitates the beginning of the phrase at G5.…

The orchestra consisted of instruments such as violins, violas, cellos, and flutes, that helped create an allegro moderato orchestral introduction. This being Mozart’s first Violin Concerto, it is very important that he begins his work in this way, showing progression in his creative career. It demonstrates the transaction between some of his first piano concertos, to his new development of mastering the art of the violin. This charming and energetic introduction then leads to the adagio movement; a slower flow. Hsuan-…

    Für Elise Analysis

The piece of music that I’ve selected to write about is a solo piano composition named Für Elise that was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Für Elise literally translates to “For Elise”, a title that has raised many questions and few answers. The main reason that I’ve chosen this piece of music to write about is because it is a piece that is very well known, even to people who are not involved in music, and “is a common catalyst and inspiration that causes many people to become interested in the piano.” Für Elise is a revolutionary piece of music, and to support this claim we must first examine the fundamental elements in the piece as well as the emotion and visualization that makes this piece so impacting.…
