Tom takes over as man of the house. Fresh out of university, Tom is back home now, he has two jobs and living in a family system that is in shambles as soon as his younger sister, Megan leaves, eventually however, Tom is the piece of the puzzle that holds everything together. When Megan leaves Adam starts to grow hungry, Emily is almost glued to upstairs taking care of Dominic, and Peter and Corey are up to even more shenanigans now that Megan is gone. Tom steps up, he pulls up his socks, and gets straight to work. While already having two jobs, Tom picks up a third; taking care of the house, Adam, Peter, and Corey. His first step in saving the system was helping Adam, who was going hungry for at least two days. Tom’s mother is upstairs, his father is in his study, there is no one to help Adam, so he decides to get up and go to the store, regardless of the giant snow storm outside. “How long had it been since their mother came downstairs and cooked a meal” (Lawson 2013). “I’m going to buy some food” (Lawson 2013). Tom is a system saviour, if Tom went out to the grocery store during that snowstorm, no one would even notice, Adam, Peter, and Corey would most likely starve. Tom also becomes the new father figure, the kids rarely ever went to Edward as it is with their problems, and barely even looked at him someone they can look up to, and talk to about their everyday lives.
