Project management plans may differ based on an organizations size or style, by project type or cost, or even based on the client and project manager relationship. Therefore, there are many factors that may affect whether a project management plan is written at a summary level or detailed, or if subsidiary plans are necessary (Project Management, 2013). The project management plan is an extremely crucial tool, as it is often relied upon as the primary document to manage the project. It is extremely valuable as it describes how the project will be executed, monitored, and controlled, as it integrates and consolidates all plans set in motion (Project Management, 2013).
While there are many characteristics of a project management plan, the four main sections generally include: the project overview, project organization, project management, and the schedule (CSU-Global, 2013). The sections are then broken down further into subsections, which create a more manageable structure for all stakeholders involved. A project management plan for the National MPS Society to create a new program for a non-profit organization, run by minimal staff, and an all volunteer board, must be extremely well thought out.
