As I glance around my surroundings atop a comfortable bed, I observe a desk equipped with a computer, a drawing desk ladened with paper, and a lamp upon a bedside table. I get up off of my bed and leave my bedroom to find four other family members, my parents and two younger siblings. I can but help to feel that I am extraordinarily gifted and privileged to be given all that I have. Throughout the world there are injustices, unmet needs, and sufferings that happen everyday of which I have never had to experience. It is for this reason that myself and countless other volunteers strive to alleviate the pains and struggles of others as best I can. It's an unbelievably daunting task that we have in front of us that requires a communal effort …show more content…
Nicaragua is the poorest country in all of the Americas, so many of the world's most poverty stricken people can be found in abundance. It was an incredibly eye opening experience to say the least. Many of the people survived off only the trash that was delivered from the trash trucks of which they salvaged all they could from the heaps. Project HOPE helps provide materials and tools for building housing communities for these people and hands out as much food as they can disperse among the masses. They give them their humanity, often finding them jobs, preaching to them the gospel, and ultimately giving them hope that things would not remain this way for forever. As a Computer Science Major with a double minor in art, the opportunities to assist in the "good fight" against poverty, uneducated, and tyrannical governments are unending and greatly required. Through computers the ultimate resource of communications, crowd-source funding, and connection between each other is virtually limitless. To be able to help in software or web development for non-profit organizations like Project HOPE and Convoy of Hope is eventually my goal. I desire to share my profession to other people so that I might make the maximum amount of positive impact with the time that I

In my seventeen years of living, I have gone through my fair share of tragedies. Yes, at seventeen years old. I have seen a marriage fall apart and a family member die right before my eyes. But even after all this, I’ve learned that everything happens for a reason and life shouldn’t be taken so seriously besides all the misfortunes it could throw at us. All of my family lives in Nicaragua, so growing up my mother and I would travel every time we had the chance.…

14.7 million children live in poverty. I am one of them. And yet, no one seems to notice me or care. I’m just another piece of garbage in the street, just another thin, starved child that is above the notice of anyone. I wish tears could change my life, as if they could somehow wash out the hurt, and pain, as if they could drown the struggle.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

On my second trip to Nicaragua one of the girls on the trip developed a reaction on her ankle. As the trip leader, I was responsible for the safety of all the students. At first it was nothing more then a little red patch and our hosts said we would need to wait till morning to get it looked at. Nicaragua, the country that saw me born and embraced me as I grew up is best known for its phenomenal lakes, astonishing volcanoes and sensational beaches. Nicaragua, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, provides a personal contact with nature and a rich biodiversity. My country is full of culture, religious festivities, delightful gastronomy and pleasant traditional music and dances. However, behind its flawless nature, it is a third world country and the second poorest country in Latin America. People suffer and struggle due to extreme poverty and unemployment.…

Growing up in the upper-middle class allows you to live a comfortable lifestyle. My parents always provided our family with what we needed and always had extra to help those in need. Giving money to organizations or people is fantastic, but physically helping someone in need goes a lot farther. In early January, 2014, my dad came up to my room late one night and told me about something that he had been thinking about. I remember exactly what he said to me, “Hey Austin, I have been praying and thinking and… I think we should go with the church down to Nicaragua on a mission trip”.…

Before this semester I never knew a way to communicate with the people who take action in helping the problems of the world. I’ve been thinking about helping with this type of situation since I was in middle school, but I never knew how to and I never knew how to take action. Know I have the chance to help with the teachers and my companions help too. This I never had the chance to do this by myself. Class Analysis Throughout my 19 years of life I’ve lived a great life. I have a great house to live in, a family that loves me unconditionally, abundance amounts of clothing, food has never been an issue, I’ve gotten pretty much everything I have ever wanted in life and I’m beyond blessed because of it. I’ve never had to struggle with what I’m going to eat the next day, or where I’m going to live next, and I think I’ve taken those aspects of my life for granted because not everyone is as grateful as I have been. International Development and Resource Justice has been a controversial issue for some time now. In today’s society, the separation from the rich and the poor has become much more drastic. Countries and companies always make decisions based on what can make them a buck, but at what cost? Time and time again you see countries that battle decades of oppression and struggle only to be taken advantage of their resources, land and civilization.…
