As a student at Curtis Institute of Music, we are required to take Curtis’s new one-semester course, Social Entrepreneur. The course teaches students to create and sustain social value through community-based service opportunities. My service project for this year is Project H.O.M.E, which is a Philadelphia non-profit organization empowering individuals to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through affordable housing, employment, health care, and education. Neil and I, two percussionist, are honored to be selected to deliver some musics for the community. After I finished the project, I had many thoughts and feelings. We had a discussion about the event and process about a week ago. We decided to teach them some percussion instruments and at the end they can choose one of their favorite instrument to play and sing the song that they and Gabriella wrote together. Neil and I picked one conga, triangle, tambourine, shaker and other instruments that easy to learn with. They may have metal illness, but definitely no harm to others. After the explanation, I understood the things they had been through and I was hoping I can help them through the fun of percussion instruments. I initially signed up for PSYCH 1101 to fulfill a distribution requirement, but it turned out to be so much more for me. Having never been exposed to psychology in high school, I was curious to see what psychology was and whether I would like or not. Turns out, I liked it a lot. Taking PSYCH 1101 seemed to open my eyes to a whole new branch of science. I truly believe it’s extremely important for supports to acknowledge and understand that this is extremely special because, the situation these students are in. Having the money, quality instruments, and a new team is not going to make Landfill Harmonic project greater. What the project needs is support for what they are doing. Supply more building materials, more tools to build, alternative ways to teach how to play, and an audience. Respecting what these students, Mr. Chavez, and Nicholas have done is a great cross-cultural skill that would help others understand the benefits of the Landfill Harmonic…

I was striving for an unattainable goal because I didn’t work towards any form of progression. On the other hand, being an instrumentalist has taught me the importance of daily goals, a good work ethic, and dedication. With that in mind, I am becoming more aware that music is not just the notes on an staff but also the zipping of a jacket and even the tumbling on a trampoline floor. I believe that my five year old self would be proud of who I am becoming because I have already completed my personal goals instead of lacking improvement in the shadows of someone…

In Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”, citizens live without individuality, intelligence, and emotions, all of which can be connected to the absence of playable music. In the real world, everyone is affected by music that they listen to or create themselves, but it is truly underestimated. People have the distinguished ability to express their individuality through the varying types of music in the world and how they react to it. Being a musician can challenge someone’s mental and physical abilities and, if they accept the challenge, can make them more intelligent and capable members of society. Music can also cater to one’s differing emotions and help them to understand their feelings and coping methods.…

Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case.…

Music has been an essential part and larger than expected role in my life since elementary school. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long.
