In the poem, by Johnson states, “Lift every voice and sing, till the Earth and Heaven ring/Ring with the harmonies of liberty” (51). In the poem, these first two lines in the first stanza reveals how the Blacks had to come together towards a long journey to get their freedom. Although it may have taken them a while to get their freedom, no matter how disappointed they may have gotten along the journey, they knew they had to see the brighter side. It wasn’t easy for them, but to receive the “liberty” they had to work together. The quote that Johnson say’s in the poem “Lift every voice and sing” is referring to the black community (51). With teamwork in the black community, they had to reassure one another that no matter what, good will come. Thus refers that the “Earth and Heaven ring” is the trouble that the Black community might face along the journey (Johnson 51). The Blacks then had to see the brighter side to accomplish their freedom which is “Ring with the harmonies of liberty” (Johnson 51). They had to believe that the trouble they have gotten themselves into was worth it. This is the part when they celebrated their journey to freedom. Johnson illustrates “Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,/ Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;/ Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,/ Let us march on till victory is won” (51). He reveals the struggle they came from, to the success they have now (51). When Johnson states “Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,/ Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us”, he tries to elaborate to his readers that even though the struggles was real to escape slavery, the black community didn’t give up in accomplishing their goal to escape slavery. The escaping of slavery for the black community then led to becoming grateful because the present wouldn’t be as great if the journey to freedom didn’t. As the Black community is now enjoying the abolishment of slavery, Johnson writes “Facing the rising sun of our new day begun” to show how the black community can enjoy their new life and distance themselves away from what was the past. Johnson then ends his last line in his first stanza “Let us march on till victory is won” to encapsulate that although the Black community has successful escape slavery there’s still more things to improve in life until victory can be finalize.
