Birthday Party Videos Project#1
Introduction: For this project I decided to compare and contrast two typically developing children of ages two and five. I chose the videos from the list provided to the class, which where girl #2 on the 2-year-old column and girl# 1 on the 5 year old column. My hypothesis based on what I know from this course so far and reading a couple of articles on the web, is that the two year old girl will seem to be a bit confused and quiet, especially when singing to her or blowing the candles, but will be excited and playful when other children are around but not exactly interact with them (“Growth and Development, Ages 2

A difference between the two videos is language. In the 2-year-old video, based on my observations, she only said one word. It was difficult in a way to collect data based on the video being fast-forward at some points. For the 5-year-old video, also based on the data I collected, she said 28 words. Each coding was for 3 minutes and 30 seconds, which started on the “Happy Birthday” song. Language development grows dramatically within 2 years of age to a child of 5 years of age. The 2-year-old girl only said “open” when referring to her mom opening her present. The 5-year-old can create full sentences almost perfectly. Based on Piaget’s theory of development, in the preoperational stage children language grows significantly (Siegler & Alibali, 2005, p.41). The child in this video interacts a lot with her playmates and seems to want to be liked in a way. Piaget also states that children in this stage can have a difficult time looking passed there own self (Siegler & Alibali, 2005, p.42).
As I predicted with the hypothesis I made previously, the 2-year-old girl seemed to be a little confused of what was going on in her surroundings. She did not seem to be focused or interested, where as the 5-year-old girl seemed to be very interested and intrigued with the event. Based on the data I collected for coding schemes, the 2- year- old only smiled once, where as the 5-year-old smiled about 10 times within the same time frame that was previously explained for the two videos as

Introduction: Child development involves emotional, physical, sociable, and intellect changes over a period from conception through adolescence. Childhood is a multifaceted process in which many changes occur. To fully understand the changes throughout childhood, one interview and observation was conducted to a toddler perspective, and a second interview and observation was implemented on a school-age child. Vast changes arise from infancy and toddlerhood, jumping to later childhood, and that was deceptive when comparing the outcomes from the two observations. Alex, who is eight years old, was the topic of the school-age child interview and observation.…

By the age of 4-5 years a child can usually play cooperatively and well with other children. They may also be able to sort out minor disagreements between themselves. They are able to tolerate delay for longer periods especially when this is explained to link in with routine of the day which they are now familiar with. They show concern when they can see their peers visibly upset and will try to comfort them. As language has developed they are able to express their emotions through language rather than behaviour.…

While Piaget does acknowledge that children may reach a stage slower or faster depending on the specific environment they develop or how they interact with different environments, these are not elaborated on or accounted for in his model (Bukatko & Daehler, 2001). Subsequently individual differences due to the environment cannot be explained in his theory. A crucial study (Dunn, Brown, Slomkowski, Tesla & Youndblade, 1991) examined children at the age of 33 months and their relationship with their family. 7 months later they were tested among other things on their ability to take different perspectives by having to identify the feelings of a puppet. Children that had conversations with their families about feeling could relate to and explain the puppets feeling…

I was very intrigued with the TED videos that were assigned to this paper. I am always interested in learning more about how children at such a young age develop everything that is essential for when we age in adulthood. In the first video “What Do Babies Think?” The first experiment included babies that were the age of fifteen to eighteen months. I was amazed to find there was a significant amount of difference between a fifteen-month and an eighteen-month baby and how their brain processes information.…

Initially, I was extremely nervous to perform the observations because I was unsure that I would be able to record all of the significant information into the running record fast enough. I also felt that it would be difficult to sit in one position and watch a child for twenty to ninety minutes. Once I completed my first multi-age observation, my nerves subsided because I realized that I was able to sufficiently record the child’s behaviors and actions in the running record, and the time passed by quicker than I had expected. Throughout the ten hours of observations, I discovered that the years of early childhood are extremely crucial to children’s development and significant changes take place in each stage. I was able to see these changes and developments, while completing the multi-age observations.…
