There were three presidents that were closely tied to progressivism: Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. Progressivism is the belief in reform for the middle and lower class to have a higher standard of living. Progressives wanted change in economic equality. They wanted to help the middle class and lower class so they would have better living conditions. They wanted to help the middle and lower class so they would have better working conditions. Also, progressives wanted to regulate child labor, to improve working conditions and expand democracy. Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson did many things to support the goals progressivism.

Taft passed the 16 amendment, ratified the 17 amendment , established the Children's Bureau under the Department of Labor and wanted to reform the banking system. The 16 amendment that Taft passed was, a federal income tax which stated that if a citizen had a job they then had to pay taxes. The 17 amendment that Taft ratified was Direct Election of Senators. Direct Election gave more power to the people of who they wanted to be senators of their stare. The Children’s Bureau under the Department of Labor investigated and publicized the problems of child labor. Taft urged congress to reform the banking system to be more stable. Some of the many ways Wilson helped was he ratified the 18 and 19 amendment, established the Keating-Owen Child Labor Act and created the Underwood Tariff Act. The 18 amendment outlawed the drinking, manufacturing and transportation of alcohol in the United States. Many people wanted this to become an amendment before it was ratified. The 19 amendment was the women's right to vote. It stated that the right to vote shall not be accepted or denied based on gender. Wilson was the only president out of the progressive era to address the issue of women’s suffrage. The Keating-Owen act made it illegal for children under 14 to work because citizens wanted the children to further their education. The employers weren't happy with this act because children could be paid less than adults and they were smaller so they could get into smaller spaces to fix many different things. The Underwood Tariff Act reduced tariffs and created a graduated income tax which required people with higher income to pay a larger percentage of their income as a tax. The act reduced tariffs on manufactured goods and some imported goods did not have a tax on them
