Programming Pancake Research Paper

My dad is a pancake master. He makes pristine 3-inch circles of joy in a hot pan within minutes– he’s got every ingredient and topping perfected.

And I have mastered the perfect programming pancake.

I start with a slosh of affirmation, thrown in to a medley of constructive criticism and helpful hints. I stir in a heaping of code-completion, along with a tantalizing final project. And finally, I top it off with the sweet, oozing surprise of learning a new skill.

The pancakes are delicately served to my 7-11 year old programming students. I watch their eager faces, enticed by the fluffy hotcakes, knowing that the mix-ins of affirmation and syrup on top mean just as much as the skills within. I show them their next project, a customized version of “flappy bird” –their eyes glimmer at the code they’re about to indulge in.

After taking a HTML course at my school, I wanted to further explore technology by taking AP Computer Science; however, due to a lack of interest, the class didn’t run. Without a guide, I lacked direction in my programming affairs, so I saw this an opportunity within my school to invite more girls into the digital world. Motivated to empower the girls at my school, I approached my school’s head about the lack of programming courses in the senior years. I proposed my idea to create a coding club to the parents’ auxiliary, pitching my “programming pancake” recipe. Upon their approval, I began developing a course curriculum for a weekly coding club with the junior girls to build an interest in computer science.

The course curriculum was centered around my recipe; a balance of the rich, dense coding skills, as well as the sugary sweetness of engaging colours and cute graphics. To teach graphic design and game design, I planned activities such as designing Mother’s Day cards online and coding 2048! Once the curriculum was finalized, I began coding weekly with the

Raph’s interest in creative writing is also growing, with him setting bi-weekly deadlines for himself to write chapters of his book. In the future, though Raph would like to go into graphic design, taking courses like art and intro to computers now to help him in the future and building a foundation. Raph is also an extremely very visual learner, and learns best when he has instructions in front of him either with diagrams or with text, working best independently, but if he is in a group he can work as long he has one or two other competent partners. Taking this in into consideration, he chose arts as his favorite subject in school and math as the his least favorite. His approximate mark in English last year was 85%.…

For years people have struggled with the notion of ‘personal freedom,” and in truth this has been because of people failing to understand where to search for the concept of ‘freedom.’ Maggie Nelson, in “Great to Watch,” states that she prefers art that is not a member of a dichotomy where it either “terrorizes” or “chaperones” viewers. Instead, she prefers art that is neither “terrorizing” nor “chaperoning” viewers because this art presents an opportunity for the viewer to form his or her own opinions on the subject matter at hand, and instead of shocking the viewer or trying to force the viewer into a false realization, the viewer is actually learning about the subject. In Cathy Davidson’s “Project Classroom Makeover,” this freedom of…

Dear University Honors Program Appeals Committee, I would like to thank you ahead of time for taking the time to review my appeal. I fully understand the selectiveness of the honors program (especially for CSE) as well as respect the initial honors decision based off my initial application. However, there is new academic information that I believe warrants a reconsideration for my admission into the University Honors Program. Specifically, this new academic information is my performance during the 2016 fall semester as well as my academic pursuits outside of my high school curriculum.…

Strong subject knowledge is seen to be essential for effective teaching, Schulman, (1986,1987) Eraut,(1994), Turner-Bisset (2001).Throughout the processes of planning, assessment, differentiation or feedback, proficient subject knowledge is deemed vital. With the new National Curriculum, DfE.(2013) focusing strongly on the acquisition of knowledge, the need for teachers to sustain high levels of subject knowledge across the curriculum has never been more crucial. Demands on a teachers’ subject knowledge can be particularly challenging across the Primary curriculum, when practitioners are expected to have a substantial level of subject knowledge in all curriculum subjects. Alexander et al (1992, p.2) suggest that the level of subject knowledge…

PREPARATION To build a theoretical structure upon which an application with intrinsic value can coalesce requires dedication, patience, and a curious mind. In order to allocate the appropriate time required by a project that calls for both theoretical framework and a utilitarian approach, I formed a specialized team to better fulfill this project: • Acting as the theorist of the project, co-leader Robert Riglietti has consulted with his advisor Dr. Ian Reyes, a professor of communication studies with a focus in media, regarding journals and passages that are pertinent to the project. These include: The Network Society by Manuel Castells, Various papers by Danah Boyd, and Who Owns the Future by Jaron Lanier.…

Another reason I chose computer science is because computers are shaping the direction our world takes and I want to play a part in that. The idea of writing a program that helps a physicist decode the secrets of the universe or a doctor discover a cure for a serious disease holds great appeal for me. Computer science is a continually growing field and with computers becoming involved in almost every aspect of our lives it should remain so for the foreseeable future. Thanks to computer chips imbedded in everything from basketballs and shoes to computer-controlled thermostats more and more computerized data is being produced daily and to manage the acquisition, storage and use of this data will require computer scientists [1]. While sending jobs overseas will slow some aspects of computer science-related job growth overall computer science jobs are expected to continue growth through 2020 [3], [4], [5].…
