When first prompted with the assignment to volunteer 20 hours somewhere off the University of Minnesota’s campus, I was quite stressed out because I was not sure how I would find the time. However, as I was reading through the list of possible locations to volunteer, one particular place grabbed my attention. The name of this place was Waite House, and thankfully it is the organization where I am currently engaging in my service-learning. Waite House is located in the Ventura Village neighborhood within the Phillips community in Minneapolis. This organization caught my attention because not only was it relatively a short commute on the public transit system, but the description mentioned youth fitness and obesity/diabetes prevention.…

In choosing the depression and anxiety target genes for my study, I’ve been exposed to a wealth of literature on anxiety and mood disorders. My experience studying the influence of nonoptimal early environments on the developing brain and later symptomatology of depression and anxiety has sparked an interest in pursuing a career in the molecular biology of psychiatric disorders.…

Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…
