Dear diary, For this month's disease diary, I found a disease that kind of interested me on a website with a list of almost every disease/disorder. The disease I found interesting was progesterone dermatitis. Since I had never heard of it before and it seemed interesting, I did some research. Progesterone dermatitis is a skin condition that is rare. This is a disease that can only be found in women. It is also known as autoimmune progesterone dermatitis. In this disease, the woman gets a rash usually during her luteal phase. A luteal phase is also known as the “late pre-menstrual phase of the cycle. This is when the blood level of the sex-hormone progesterone rises” (Wong, 2013). The rash is often described as cyclic rash. This means that the disease follows the same pattern each monthly cycle. One test is a skin-prick test. This test is also used to see if people have allergies to certain things. A couple of years ago, I had a skin-prick test, but they told me I wasn’t allergic to anything. If you do have progesterone dermatitis, then you will know fairly quickly with a skin-prick test. You will know quickly if hives start to appear on your skin. But, there are also other kinds of tests that can be done. They have provocative tests, which is where you are exposed to what they are testing for. In this case, they will give you an oral progesterone, and they monitor the results. Another way to test to see if you have this disease is a skin biopsy, but this is rarely done alone to diagnose this disease.
