Profiling a Child Molester
Katie Hanselman
Virginia Western Community College Abstract
This paper will be discussing the effects of a child molester on the people surrounding the child molester. The purpose of this paper is to show that the effects on a person’s childhood can affect the way the person acts when they get older. If the person is molested as a child they are more likely to become a molester when they become older. My focus for this paper is to show that the way that a person is raised can determine if they follow in the footsteps of their molester. I want to show the psychological affects a child molester has on a person. I want to show that just because someone is molested as a child does not mean that they will become

(Lev-Wiesel & Witztum, 2006). The motive behind child molester is different from person to person. What makes a person go after children is still unknown, there is no way of knowing what makes these sick individuals go after children. Some people that go after children cannot help it because that is what they grew up around and they were most likely molested themselves. “Mention “child molesters” to the average audience, or even to most professional audiences, and they will immediately suggest “Colt .45 therapy” or castration.” (Salter, …show more content…
Some of these fantasies include having things that are child related in the house as decorations. They also will photograph the children so that when they are alone they can engage in masturbation to the photo of the child. The offender will also collect child porn and this is the most common thing that is found when a child molester’s house is searched. (Hazelwood & Burgess, 1987).
The life of a child molester is just like anyone else except for the fact that they wake up wanting to have sex with children. These people are mentally ill and need help that is not always available like it needs to be. One example of a child molester in real life post jail would be Jake Goldenflame. He was accused of molesting his five year old daughter he served five years for that. He tried to hide his past but was unable to do so. (Kormblum, 2003). This is an example of what the child molester faces once they are released from jail. These offenders are just like you and me they are our next door

“People often picture child sex offenders as unclean men with a long beard and a black trench coat. This, however, is typically not the case” (“Inside the Mind”). The image of the common sex offender is very misconstrued. Many times they are not rough and gritty men, but more so clean cut gentlemen. Many people tend to think that a child molester is a strange man that swoops up a child out of nowhere but, the truth is that most offenders know their victims before they assault them.…

On Chapter 11 of the book, The Myth That Sex Offenders Are Beyond Redemption, the chapter begins off how people and the media subscribes myths about sex offenders, (SOs) that are often misinformed and misguided. Some of the popular myths about SOs that people often get misinformed are: often prey on unsuspecting strangers, high recidivism rates, SO treatment does not work, and they must be monitored closely. However, not all sex offenders do. The majority of sex offenders do not prey to unknown victims but are known to their victims, “sexual perpetrators victimized strangers in about 27 percent of rapes and 15 percent in sexual assaults” (Bureau of Justice Statistic 1997). The myth about sex offenders have high recidivism rates, “Sex offenders with past arrests are more likely…

To combat the issue of juvenile sex offenders from a social control perspective, there must be a focus on prevention instead of rehabilitation or punishment. From a family perspective, there is a major focus on economics. Of all the working single mothers in the United States, eighty-seven percent make minimum wage, meaning they are most likely working full time to support their families. This leaves more time for children of single parents to be unsupervised. This supervision is crucial to combatting juvenile sex offenses when referring back to the fact that the majority of offenses occur at either the victim’s or perpetrator’s home.…

There is a value in developing sexual offender typologies. Typologies are also known as "classification schemes, that utilize offenders' characteristics and/ or victim-choice information to outline a framework for analysis" (Terry, 2013, p. 93). These typologies are beneficial in that they provide a comprehensive understanding of accurate offense patterns and risk. It helps us become aware of the circumstances and characteristics surrounding the offender and what influences their behavior, in order for us to control this behavior in the future by planning a proper and appropriate treatment intervention and effective supervision. There are various existing typologies for both male and female sex offenders.…

Hart-Kerkhoffs decided to study the frequency of mental disorders in a particular type of juvenile offenders, sexual offenders in relationship to the recidivism rate. Two separate groups of juvenile offenders, one with child victims, and the other with teen or adult victims were studied, and of these groups 75% of them were found to have a mental disorder (Hart-Kerkhoffs, 2015). This shows the overwhelming rate of mental disorders amongst juvenile offenders, even finding more than one disease in many offenders. Additionally, two thirds of the youths were functionally weakened (Hart-Kerkhoffs, 2015). It is even estimated that a significant of rapes are committed juveniles, so that “26% of all sex offenders… and 36% of all sex offenders with juvenile victims were minors” (Hart-Kerkhoffs, 2015).…

Life after Prison When most people think of individuals that have been labeled sex offenders in their area, there is not much remorse or empathy felt toward them. All sex offenders are characterized as child molesting sex enthusiasts when in reality, that’s not always factual. When a person commits a crime qualifying them as a federal sex offender, their life has changed forever in the worst way. The magnitude of the crime is almost always irrelevant and treatment is level in the eyes of the law. Every sex offender is required by law to register on an online database for sex offenders as noted by the Notification Act, and possibly undergo psychological and physical treatment methods as well as probation upon their release.…

Tallon and Terry, (2004) states, according to the study on the findings of child molester the crime behavior is on a micro level because this deals with the individual behavior and everyday interaction with people and objects(Tallon and Terry, 2004). For example, when a child molester goes to work they might see a photo of someone else’s child and try to get close and make that individual their first or next victim. The major reasons are many child molesters have experienced an abusive childhood so they grow up to do the same because that is what most only know what to do. There are several theories that break down the sexual assault (Tallon and Terry,…

ntroduction S ex offenders have received considerable attention in recent years from both policymakers and the public. This is due at least in part to the profound impact that sex crimes have on victims and the larger community. While most perpetrators of sex crimes are adults, a significant percentage of sexual offenders are under age 18. Given the prevalence of sexual offending by juveniles, and the potential links between sexually abusive behavior during adolescence or childhood and sexual offending later in life, therapeutic interventions for juveniles have become a staple of sex offender management practice in jurisdictions across the country. Indeed, the number of treatment programs for juveniles who commit a sexual offense has increased…

A specific problem that faces that criminal justice system is child exploitation in the age of technology. Child exploitation is a crime that has existed for millennia, but since technology has developed, the crime has grown exponentially. Traditionally a predator would have to target a family member or someone in the community as their pool of targets was relatively limited. However, the advancement of technology has made it easier for predators to not only collect and share paraphernalia, but it has also created a new pool of potential victims. To begin with, the definition of child pornography must be understood so the extent of how technology can contribute to its production can be understood.…
