The Positive Effects of Gaming
Facing reality can be a much less daunting task when a person has a healthy outlet, such as video games, that allows them to satisfy various unfulfilling aspects of their life. There are many positive effects of gaming on those who participate, because video games allow people to interact with each other, allow people to truly be themselves, help people accomplish things that they would not be able to do in real life, offer gamers opportunities to be accepted, and promote positive messages.

Video games allow people to be themselves by using their alter egos to reflect their true identity. In the article, “Profiles from Alter Ego: Avatars and Their Creators,” author Robbie Cooper and co-author Tracy Spaight explore the identity of a male French student named Cassien Guier, who created a female character named La blonde in the game City of Heroes, because he wanted to create a superhero that reflected his inner self. La blonde has big breasts and a pretty smiley face, which represents the person that Guier really is inside, but chooses not to portray in the real world. People feel safe to express themselves in the virtual world, because video games provide a certain level of anonymity. Many people, such as Guier, may find it liberating to design a character who is exactly what they wish they could be in the real world. Gamers have found solace in gaming, perhaps, because the barrier between them and the person that they are playing with gives them the courage to express themselves. Many gamers have found that the only way to feel comfortable enough to express themselves is through the virtual alter ego that they create, who identifies with all of their beliefs and ideals that they have developed in the real world. Video games offer many positive opportunities for people to be truly accepted by their peers for who they are. Given the fact that many video games allow players to disguise their true identity, they can help people to overcome discrimination against physical disabilities, sexism, and gender identity. Many people who find it difficult to interact socially in the real world discover that they are warmly accepted in the gaming community, because they are judged by their skills and personality, rather than their physical appearance or social status. In the real world, many people are simply terrified to be themselves, because they feel too self-conscious to dress the way they want, say the things that they want, or openly support their personal beliefs, because they fear rejection and negative judgment. In the virtual world, many people feel safe to express themselves, because they are confident that they will be accepted by like-minded people regardless of who they are or what they believe. For many people, video games are the only place where a person can cultivate meaningful friendships. Without video games, some people have virtually no social contact.
