In the article, “Profiles from Alter Ego: Avatars and Their Creators,” author Robbie Cooper and co-author Tracy Spaight explore the identity of a male French student named Cassien Guier, who created a female character named La blonde in the game City of Heroes, because he wanted to create a superhero that reflected his inner self. La blonde has big breasts and a pretty smiley face, which represents the person that Guier really is inside, but chooses not to portray in the real world. People feel safe to express themselves in the virtual world, because video games provide a certain level of anonymity. Many people, such as Guier, may find it liberating to design a character who is exactly what they wish they could be in the real world.
