Imagine a town that is small enough that people know each other very well, but also is big enough to keep meeting new people. My hometown of Cary, Illinois is a very inviting place where people are friendly to new members of the community and also keep close relationships with community members as well. I believe this small community has allowed me to really be myself and be confident that I will find people and friends who like me for who I am. My hometown of Cary Illinois has a population of about 17,965 as of this year (2017), which may seem very large or very small compared to how some people grew up. To me, however, this size town has allowed me flourish and be confident about myself. One prime example of this is my high school, as cliché as it sounds. There are many different events in Cary throughout the year that bring the community together and show what the community has to offer. Some of these events include National Night Out every August, Cary Main Street Fest every September, and the farmers market every weekend during the summer. All of these events allow people, like me, to find interests in the community that I enjoy, and feel confident that there will be people that are supportive and even share that interest.
These two communities, my high school community and the Cary community, have allowed me to find myself and feel confident while doing so. There are so many different people in such a small, close-knit community, and most of them are gladly willing to help one another. People in this amazing town are so supportive of whatever someone wants to do, such as starting a new business, or even just giving advice to people who want/need it. I am very glad that I got the chance to grow up in the town of Cary, Illinois, and I can say that I would not be the same if it were not for this

Apple pie on the window sill, sprinklers running over the back yard, a lemonade stand on the front yawn : Welcome to Smalltown, U.S.A. Should you add in a theatre dedicated to supporting local talent, ten schools ran by determined staffs, and several local businesses, you’d watch Smalltown become Culpeper, Virginia. Culpeper, a county that embraces diversity, is the poster for a small town. If this sounds like a boring place to live, an in depth look may be needed. The town of Culpeper is a very beneficial place to live in, thanks to the accurate cliche of a small town, the surge of local business, and the multiple activities available to adolescents.…

As we embark on our journey to understand human behavior, social workers must give consideration to the communities in which the people live. Individual behavior is influenced by the interactions which takes place between the micro, macro and macro systems found within these particular settings. The interrelatedness among these social systems provides social workers with a variety of tools for improving the many exchanges which occur between the individuals and the social systems. Since human behavior does not exist in a vacuum; an essential element in reshaping behavior must be found within the communities where they either reside or have a membership to. Special attention must also be given to how the particular individual defines his own community membership.…

Before moving to the city of Portsmouth, Virginia I grew up in the small country town of Lavaca, Arkansas. While some aspects of living in the city is consistent with living in the country, the city lifestyle offers more convenience, experiences, and opportunities. Growing up in a town with a population of around two thousand people means being a part of a tight knit community. I was surprised to find that same sense of community living in a town of over ninety-six thousand people. I have built friendly relationships with many of my neighbors and attended community events and gatherings in the same way I did living in the country.…

When shopping at Safeway, it is not unlikely that the ten minute trip will turn into an hour long conversation with a third grade teacher, or the woman who has lived down the street for twenty years. The high school’s graduating class has been together since kindergarten, and most of the teachers also taught those graduate parents. As a result, people from small towns are outrageously friendly; more than willing to have a conversation or learn about another persons life, even if it is in the bathroom at Olive Garden. Additionally, everyone is someone in a small town. From a young age, children are instilled with the understanding that people have a life beyond what can be seen.…

A common thing for us as humans to do is think “what if?” I tend to think of all the options of how my life could have been and how it would’ve affected me as a person, if things were a little different. I was born in Dallas, Texas a large town with a population of 1.258 million. My dad worked as a window installer which caused him to constantly fly around the state and because of this it was just my mom and I for the first 5 years of my life. This summer I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Chicago with my youth group. This experience changed my life in ways I cannot comprehend, and really opened my eyes to see how imperfect this world is and that a little help can go a long way. It was a great experience to dedicate my time to serve in multiple food kitchens, thrift stores, children centers, and church ministries. Going to a big city, where there is a lot of crime, people with nothing and living on the streets, children misbehaving in classes because at home the only way they can get attention sometimes is by misbehaving, is just very overwhelming. I love my community and I would not have wanted to be born and raised anywhere else, however living in such a small rural…
