The following self-reflection profile essay highlights my professional and academic experiences as it relates to Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule. Gladwell presents research from neurologist Daniel Levitin that explains “that ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert-in anything” (Gladwell, 2008, pg. 39). Gladwell states that “outliers in a particular field reached their lofty status through a combination of ability, opportunity, and utterly arbitrary advantage” (Gladwell, 2008, pg. 37). It seemed like the perfect next step as I was born with an inquisitive nature and fascination of the unknown. Unfortunately, at a young age I was easily distracted by the sandy beaches and did not complete my degree. I did lose some momentum as a result, but soon regrouped and transferred to Boston University to live with my brother who was attending Harvard University. The newly formed health system was planning to build a state-of-the-art cancer center later named “Smilow Cancer Hospital”. I served as the primary information technology expert and coordinated the planning and implementation of all innovative technology efforts for the cancer hospital. The project was consuming and overwhelming at times requiring countless hours and dedication. I gratefully spent the majority of my time for over two years devoted to the project. I believe my tireless dedication stemmed from a sincere interest to contribute my skills and knowledge to improving the lives of others. I found a sense of purpose. I could use my abilities to problem solve and invent solutions to make a difference in the world.
