Courage – From a Soldier and Leader’s Viewpoint Courage can be defined in many ways, by many people, each with its own meaning without being a textbook definition. In this paper, the word courage will be defined coming from the writer’s point of view. With the changing ways of the world today and the never ending threats that face the nation today one should always remember the people who have placed it all on the line for others by being courageous. Courage is being a shining light in the face of adversity, choosing right over wrong, and acting when the time comes. Adversity is viewed by many as the hardships one may face during an event. During these difficult times one must find the inter-personal courage or even the courage as a group to respond and triumph. Most people have heard the saying “actions speak louder than words” at some point in their lives. During some events this statement can most definitely be directly related to courage and be seen as a way to define courage; a courageous act. One of these examples was not a fire fighter or a police officer, or even a Soldier, he was a chef. During the acts of 9/11 an ordinary man, Benjamin Clark, a former Marine turned chef for a trust company located on the 96th floor of the South Tower, a husband and a father of 5, sacrificed his own life to help others, being credited with saving hundreds of lives before succumbing to the terrorist attack. Mr. Clark made the choice to stay in the damaged building ensuring everyone on his floor made it out while he stopped to help a handicapped woman (Daly, 2013).
